#BOXOFFICE: “SMILE” GIGGLES ITS WAY TO THE TOP IN OPENING
SMILE giggles its way to #1 spot in its debut, taking $22 million from 3,645 theatres for Paramount Pictures. This R-rated Horror starring Sosie Bacon, daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, gets 74% on the Tomatometer from Critics.
Second is DON’T WORRY DARLING with $7.3 million from 4,121 theatres, bringing its total to $32.8 million for Warner Bros. over two weekends.
THE WOMAN KING is in third with $7 million, a tally of $46.1 million now over three weekends for Sony Pictures.
BROS debuts in fourth with $4.8 million from 3,350 theatres for Universal Pictures. The first-ever major studio LGBTQ+ Rom-Com gets a stellar 95% on the Tomatometer, getting from tons of positive word of mouth also coming out of its TIFF ’22 Premiere.
Capping-off the Top Five is the Avatar re-release with $4.6 million, taking its two week total to $18.5 million for 20th Century Studios.

#TIFF22: “BROS”

From Director Nicholas Stoller, who brought us Neighbors and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, comes BROS. Funnyman Billy Eichner, who co-writes, produces and stars here, gets his moment in this groundbreaking LGBTQ+ Rom-Com which completely nails it.
Bobby (Eichner) is a successful Podcast Host and Philanthroper raising funds for an LGBTQ+ Historical Museum. He’s 40 and has never been in love, but meets his match in the striking Aaron (Luke MacFarlane) and while they seem polar opposites there is a definite attraction. Bobby is super-confident and unapologetic, while Aaron still is trying to find himself, stuck in a career he doesn’t love and maybe not quite as overt as Bobby.
The witty jokes never quit here and we found ourselves laughing start to finish, thanks to Eichner‘s fast-thinking introspection. And we love that the Film really explores the nuances in the spectrum of those in the LGBTQ+ community. There is an interesting dichotomy of him supporting the gays, but also being annoyed by them at once. He almost carries the entire weight of the Movie and it soars largely because of him.
Stoller is able to keep the tone hilariously comical, but when Bros decides to go a layer deeper exploring why Bobby has such a tough exterior, we realize this is so much more than just a Rom-Com. Canada’s Macfarlane is a perfect pairing grounding Bobby and at once, exposing his pain points and taking him outside his comfort zone.
I knew I’d like BROS but I didn’t realize how much I would love it. BROS screens at TIFF ’22 as follows:

It was an incredibly star-studded second day of TIFF ’22 with various Premieres kicking-off around the City ahead of what will be a busy weekend with mega-watt power at the Festival. See who spotted around town premiering their Films and doing their rounds!
We started out day early with an appearance on CP24 Breakfast with Sonia Mangat! Sbe actually has a Short Film premering at the Festival! So amazing! Thanks to those who tuned-in and sent their supportive messages!

Such an honour being invited to this event in celebration of Gina Prince-Blythewood‘s film. The Cast really brought home the message of the importance of supporting this black female-led Action Film starring Viola Davis, on its opening weekend, at the #TakeUpSpace event presented by Twitter at Mademoiselle.

Rogen is here for THE FABELMANS and reunited with his Knocked Up collaborator Apatow at this Premiere for BROS. So happy we met Joel Kim-Booster, who was seen this past Summer in FIRE ISLAND!
It’s 3 AM, time for bed and yet another early rise tomorrow! We were a little slow to start and hoping to get into our rhythm finally on Day Three. I know this sounds a little absurd since we had so many sightings but trust me, this even is a little off our usual pace. See you again in a few hours!
