Fans of 2008’s Last Chance Harvey will be excited that Director/Writer Joel Hopkins once again re-teams with Emma Thompson in Love Punch, which premiered at TIFF ’13. The Comedy centers around a divorced Couple, Richard (Pierce Brosnan) and Kate (Emma Thompson) who team together to recover their retirement funds after the money is stolen from them. With some Costumes and Texan accents, they plot to steal a Diamond Necklace worth a considerable sum from the young Fiancée (Louise Bourgoin) of the Man who swindled them. Along the way, they even get the help of a couple Friends, in Jerry (Timothy Spall) and Penelope (Celia Imrie).
Sure it is extremely outlandish, but the laughs just keep coming in Love Punch with Brosnan and Thompson pairing beautifully as a fumbling Duo with a Grand Plan and horrendous execution. One clumsy car chase scene in which Thompson does her own stunt driving is outright hilarious. Beneath it all though is a touching Love Story and with all that chemistry we wonder why it is even that Richard and Kate ever split-up to begin with. What the Film lacks in plausibility, it more than makes up for in fun and who doesn’t have time for fun?
eOne Films releases Love Punch in Canada. Date to be determined.
