TIFF is delighted to announce additional honourees who will be receiving a TIFF Tribute Award at this yearâs Festival. Recipients include award-winning Brazilian filmmaker Carolina Markowicz who will be honoured with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award presented by MGM Studios. This award is in the spirit of Torontonian Mary Pickford, the groundbreaking actor, producer, and co-founder of United Artists, whose impact continues today. Two-time Academy Awardânominated Polish cinematographer Ćukasz Ćœal will receive the TIFF Variety Artisan Award, which recognizes a distinguished creative who has excelled at their craft and made an outstanding contribution to cinema and entertainment. Both Markowicz and Ćœal will be honoured on September 10 at the fifth annual TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser at Fairmont Royal York Hotel, presented by Bulgari.
On September 15, TIFF will be honouring Andy Lau, the multi-hyphenate Hong Kong artist with a Special Tribute Award at the World Premiere Gala presentation of Ning Haoâs The Movie Emperor, in which he stars. This marks Lauâs first visit since he last attended the Festival in 2001. He will also be participating in the In Conversation With⊠(ICW) series on September 16. Lau is one of Hong Kongâs most popular entertainers, with a career spanning more than four decades and over 160 films in his filmography. He has received recognition from critics for his work in both television and film, with memorable roles in Ann Huiâs Boat People (1982), Wong Kar Waiâs As Tears Go By (1988), Andrew Lau and Alan Makâs Infernal Affairs trilogy, and reteaming with Hui in the hit drama A Simple Life (2011). Previous recipients of the Special Tribute Award include David Foster (2019) and Dionne Warwick (2021).
âWe are thrilled to honour the remarkable talents and contributions of Andy Lau, Carolina Markowicz, and Ćukasz Ćœal,â said Cameron Bailey, CEO, TIFF. âAn industry icon and multi-faceted artist with an impressive filmography, Lau has paved the way for a generation of performers. Emerging Talent honoree Markowicz has an exciting future ahead as one of the most fearless directors of her generation, and Ćœalâs cinematography continues to evoke emotion in The Zone of Interest.â
Confirming herself as one of Brazilâs clearest voices in current cinema, writer-director Carolina Markowicz returns to the Festival with the World Premiere of her second feature, Toll, on September 9. Following the acclaim of her 2022 dark and twisted comedy Charcoal, Toll is a film about a Brazilian mother who falls in with a gang of thieves in an attempt to keep her family afloat. Previous recipients of the TIFF Emerging Talent Award presented by MGM Studios include Sally El Hosaini in 2022; Danis Goulet in 2021; Tracey Deer in 2020; and Mati Diop in 2019.
Ćœal, best known for his stunning cinematography in Pawel Pawlikowskiâs Cold War and Ida, returns to the Festival with the Jonathan Glazerâdirected The Zone of Interest. The film, adapted from a 2014 novel of the same title by Martin Amis, was awarded the Grand Prix at this yearâs Cannes Film Festival. Entirely shot in Poland, Ćœalâs lens has a chilling effect â detached from the horrors of the prison camp, the camera captures the banality of the Höss family living their everyday life outside the walls of Auschwitz, contrasted by unforgettable reminders of resistance at night, and shot in monochrome by thermal-imaging cameras. Previous recipients of the TIFF Variety Artisan Award include Hildur GuĂ°nadĂłttir in 2022; Ari Wegner in 2021; Terence Blanchard in 2020; and Roger Deakins in 2019.
âVariety is honoured to be giving Ćukasz Ćœal our annual Artisan Award at the Toronto International Film Festival,â said Jazz Tangcay, Senior Artisans Editor at Variety. âWe have been fans of his work from Ida and Cold War and with his most recent film, The Zone of Interest, Ćukasz continues to raise the bar for inventive and avant-garde cinematography.â
The Tribute Awards gala is TIFFâs largest annual fundraiser, having raised $1.3 million in 2022, and is presented by Bulgari, sharing their commitment to arts and culture along with TIFF. This year, the Tribute Awards gala will support the Viola Desmond Cinema campaign, which was launched through the Every Story Fund in 2022. For more information, visit tiff.net/tribute.

In the late 1980s, Lau fully transitioned to working in film and enthralled audiences and critics alike in Wong Kar Waiâs As Tears Go By (1988) and Days of Being Wild (1990). Lau launched his own production company in the early 1990s and has starred in over 160 feature films, including Johnnie Toâs relentless police thriller Running Out of Time (1999), Andrew Lau and Alan Makâs twisty and unpredictable Infernal Affairs (2002) and Infernal Affairs III (2003), Zhang Yimouâs martial arts extravaganza House of Flying Daggers (2004), Tsui Harkâs delirious fantasy whodunit Detective Dee: The Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010), Huiâs grounded drama A Simple Life (2011), and Frant Gwoâs mega-action blockbuster The Wandering Earth 2 (2023). A natural entertainer and multi-faceted artist, Lau has won three Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor, received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 2006 Busan International Film Festival, and holds the Guinness World Record for âMost Awards Won by a Cantopop Male Artist.â He joins us for an in-depth conversation about his storied career as an actor, producer, and celebrated Cantopop singer-songwriter, as well as his new film The Movie Emperor, which is a Gala Presentation at this yearâs Festival.

The Toronto International Film FestivalÂź is delighted to announce today the 2023 selection for the Wavelengths and Classics programmes. The 2023 Wavelengths lineup is politically charged, geographically diverse, and formally thrilling, with a wide range of work drawn from the worlds of documentary, contemporary art, and international art-house cinema. Expanded in scale from previous editions, this yearâs Wavelengths boasts 12 feature films and 19 shorts, as well as a suite of four restored early films by the singular Chantal Akerman.
âWavelengths is a testament to the range of cinema celebrated at TIFF,â stated Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. âIt is also evidence that artist-driven experimental films are thriving and growing a new generation of cinephiles.â
âThe increasing necessity to support artists willing to take risks, break rules, and challenge the status quo â especially in our over-saturated media landscape â bears repeating,â said AndrĂ©a Picard, Senior Curator, TIFF. âWavelengths continues to be a celebration of subversion, personal expression, and the vast, inexhaustible capabilities of cinema to enlighten, inspire, awe, resist, disrupt, and propose new ways of seeing and being in the world. With this lineup, we hope to demonstrate how Michael Snowâs legacy of mischief making and formal acumen clearly lives on.â
Highlights of the programme include the World Premiere of He Thought He Died, from Canadian artist and filmmaker Isiah Medina, who returns to the Festival with an experimental, deconstructed take on the heist film. Also returning is luminary filmmaker Angela Schanelec with Music, a retelling of the Oedipus myth set between contemporary Greece and Germany; and Denis CĂŽtĂ© with Mademoiselle Kenopsia, the latest in the filmmakerâs rich creative collaboration with the talented actor Larissa Corriveau.
Wavelengths also welcomes a number of fiction debuts, including Rosine Mbakamâs Mambar Pierrette, an understated and finely calibrated portrait of a Cameroonian seamstress that builds upon the filmmakerâs formidable documentary background. Also featured is PháșĄm ThiĂȘn nâs contemplative Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, winner of the CamĂ©ra dâOr at this yearâs Cannes.
Non-fiction remains an important mode of artistic expression, with works ranging from Youth (Spring), the latest triumph from master filmmaker Wang Bing, shot over several years in a Zhili textile factory, to personal essay films from Miko Revereza (Nowhere Near) and Brazilian auteur Kleber Mendonça Filho (Pictures of Ghosts), as well as Paul B. Preciadoâs award-winning Orlando, My Political Biography, a rousing, playful take on Virginia Woolfâs classic novel and a daring, joyous celebration of trans life, past and present.
Filmmakers remain ever eager to scrutinize and challenge the current state of our world, as seen in Radu Judeâs scathing and hilarious satire, Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, and Eduardo Williamsâ much-anticipated The Human Surge 3, a dizzying deconstruction of borders, gender, and language shot between Peru, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan using 360° cameras.
Short film highlights include World Premieres from filmmakers Jorge JĂĄcome, Philipp Fleischmann, Joshua Gen Solondz, Steve Reinke, Shambhavi Kaul, Simon Liu, Tomonari Nishikawa, and Erica Sheu, as well as notable new work from Rose Lowder, Maryam Tafakory, JaâTovia Gary, Viktoria Schmid, Blake Williams, Pedro Costa, and Jean-Luc Godard.
Wavelengths is curated by Senior TIFF curator AndreÌa Picard and Jesse Cumming, who this year is taking on the new role of Associate Curator. The programme also includes feature film contributions from members of TIFFâs international programming team â namely Giovanna Fulvi, June Kim, Dorota Lech, Jason Anderson, and Norm Wilner.
The Wavelengths programme is named after Michael Snowâs iconic 1967 film Wavelength, and draws continued inspiration from the artistâs boundless exploration, experimentation, and innovation across media. TIFF honoured and celebrated Snow earlier this year at TIFF Bell Lightbox, after his passing in January at the age of 94, and the 2023 Wavelengths programme is dedicated to his memory.
This yearâs concise Classics lineup, supported by Ontario Creates and Canada Council for the Arts, presents films that were previously unavailable for decades, films that have been rescued and painstakingly pieced together in new restorations, and a 50th anniversary tribute to Djibril Diop MambĂ©tyâs Touki Bouki.
Films featured in the Classics lineup include the 4K uncut restoration of Chen Kaigeâs provocative 1993 Palme dâOr winner Farewell My Concubine. This screening will be the first opportunity for North American audiences to see the film ahead of its North American theatrical release. With new 4K restoration and remastered sound,* Canadian producer-director Brigitte Bermanâs Oscar-winning feature documentary Artie Shaw: Time Is All Youâve Got (1985) â portraying the life of the restless and gifted clarinettist and bandleader â returns to the screen in a World Premiere presentation. Confined to decades of oblivion and newly made available is Jacques Rivetteâs legendary New Wave film, Lâamour fou (1969), whose original celluloid elements were damaged in a fire. A special 50th anniversary screening of Touki Bouki (1973), from Sengalese luminary Djibril Diop MambeÌty, will include a panel discussion moderated by Tambay A. Obenson, Akoroko Founder and CEO, with special guests. Rounding out the programme is Ousmane SembĂšneâs Xala (1975), presented in 4K, a landmark satire of patriarchy and class in post-independence Senegal. Classics is curated by Robyn Citizen, Director of Programming and Platform Lead, with contributions from AndrĂ©a Picard.

TIFF today unveiled the 10 World Premiere features that comprise the Platform programme for 2023, along with the 2023 Platform jury members: Academy Awardâwinning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, joined by Cannes Jury Prizeâwinning director, writer, and actor Nadine Labaki, and 2022 Platform Prizeâwinning filmmaker Anthony Shim.
Since its introduction in 2015, Platform has celebrated and showcased films with unique directorial perspectives. The 10 films in the 2023 programme are eligible for the Platform Prize, an award of $20,000 CAD given to the best film in the programme, selected by an in-person international jury.
âI am delighted to announce that we have an international dream jury with acclaimed filmmakers Barry Jenkins, Nadine Labaki, and Anthony Shim as jury members for the Platform programme at TIFF,â said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. âTogether, they represent the bold and independent spirit of the Platform Prize.â
Platform is TIFFâs competitive programme that champions bold directorial visions. The films selected for this yearâs programme hail from 12 countries across three continents, all of which will be making their World Premiere at TIFF.
âWe are thrilled to present this yearâs extraordinary films in the Platform programme, and especially delighted to present Kristoffer Borgliâs latest film Dream Scenario, starring Nicolas Cage, as Platformâs opening film. This surrealist satire-comedy has sharp, timely observations about social media culture â especially âgoing viralâ â and its impact on the way that we interact with others in our day-to-day life. Cage delivers some of his finest work,â said Robyn Citizen, Director, Programming & Platform Lead. âThis yearâs diverse selection is distinguished by bold character studies and classic stories told through dynamic narrative and genre approaches. Audiences will witness the emergence of thematic threads like social exile and reconnection, woven in unexpectedly thrilling ways by an array of captivating local and international voices.â
Notable previous Platform selections include 2022 winner Riceboy Sleeps from Canadian director Anthony Shim, Hany Abu-Assadâs Hudaâs Salon (2021), Kamila Andiniâs Yuni (2021), Darius Marderâs Sound of Metal (2019), Alice Winocourâs Proxima (2019), Kazik Radwanskiâs Anne at 13,000 Ft. Many of these attention-getting titles will be coming to the Festival looking for buyers.â
TIFF Docs programme presented by A&E IndieFilms will open with the World Premiere of Copa 71 from Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine, which serves to restore the lost legacy of a 1971 international womenâs soccer tournament that had record setting crowds in Mexico City but was largely erased from sports history. World Premieres from global veteran doc makers include Raoul Peckâs Silver Dollar Road, which chronicles how a Black family fights over several decades to save their North Carolina property from land grabbing developers; Anand Patwardhanâs The World is Family, which traces his parentsâ personal history and their links to the leaders of Indiaâs independence movement; Karim Amerâs Defiant, which gains extraordinary access to Ukraineâs foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba and his colleagues as they wage a war against disinformation; Lucy Walkerâs Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, which profiles a single mother working as a dishwasher at a Connecticut Whole Foods who has another life as record-breaking mountain climber; and Roger Ross Williamsâ Stamped From the Beginning, based on the best-selling book by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, which examines the history of anti-Black racism in the U.S.

International and North American Premieres from legendary filmmakers include Frederick Wisemanâs Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros, in which the 93-year-old director embeds inside a French restaurant thatâs held three Michelin stars for more than 50 years, and Errol Morrisâ The Pigeon Tunnel, a masterful portrait of the spy novelist David Cornwell â a.k.a. John Le CarrĂ© â for what was the authorâs final interview.
Rounding out TIFF Docs 2023 with North American Premieres are Lina Soualemâs Bye Bye Tiberias, in which the director profiles her mother â Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass (Succession) â exploring her choice to leave her native village 30 years ago in pursuit of her dream of acting; AndrĂ©s Peyrotâs God is a Woman, which follows the Kuna Indigenous community in Panama as they seek to gain access to a French documentary made about them 40 years ago; Maciek Hamelaâs In the Rearview, an exceptionally intimate film following a Polish vehicle as it traverses the roads of Ukraine to help its passengers flee amidst the Russian invasion; Asmae El Moudirâs The Mother of All Lies, winner of two awards at Cannes in which â on a handmade set recreating her Casablanca neighbourhood â a young Moroccan filmmaker enlists family and friends to help solve key mysteries of her childhood; Margreth Olinâs Songs of Earth, which follows the filmmakerâs octogenarian father on walks through Norwayâs landscapes of mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls for an immersion into nature with stunning cinematography; and Pierre-Henri Gibertâs Viva Varda!, which profiles the pioneering filmmaker AgnĂšs Varda with fresh perspectives that complement her autobiographical work.

Ivan D. Ossa of Kine Ukiyo Ma and Malachi Ellis of Malachi Ellis Productions are pleased to announce that their short film, the slice-of-Gen Z-life drama, Express, has finished post-production and is ready to begin the festival circuit. Express is written and directed by Ossa (In Other News, Itâs You) and stars Joshua Obra (Scarborough), Martin Marticorena, Rebecca Ablack (Luckiest Girl Alive, Ginny & Georgia, The Good Karma Hospital) and Isaiah Peck (Sneakerella, Brother, The Next Step).
Express is produced by Malachi Ellis (Streams Flow From a River, Fish Boy, Diaspora, I Live Here), co-produced by Lauren Saarimaki (Streams Flow From a River, Queen Tut, Only Light Will Touch Us) and executive produced by Ivan D. Ossa.
Tarik (Joshua Obra) is the poster boy for the Gen Z work ethic. When he is coerced out of his success-oriented schedule to celebrate what seems to be a lifetime achievement, he is confronted by one of lifeâs ironies.
âWe live in a world where your occupation is so intertwined with your identity that after you give your name, the next question asked is, âWhat do you do?â. When asked what youâve been up to, most people instinctively talk about work. With social media shoving hustle culture and peopleâs life highlights down our throats, Itâs no wonder my generation has become obsessed with the idea of early material success. âTo live your life, you must first build it.â Sadly, Iâm also a victim of this mentality. I have this innate feeling that tells me weâre put on this earth to experience connections, but I canât seem to shake off my aspirations. Iâm the type to turn down a night out because I told myself I have to finish a project. I struggle with balancing living my life and building a better one. I know Iâm not the only one. I told myself that Iâm working hard now to rest later, but since when is your time on earth promised? How do I know today isnât my last? Isnât life itself the whole point? Why am I sacrificing experiencing my life for the sake of a future that isnât Guaranteed? These questions gave birth to this script,â said Ivan D. Ossa.
Cinematography by Brandon Kenney (In Other News, Itâs You), production design and costume design by Rebecca Fadoju (In Other News, Itâs You, Kashif) and editing by Jadon J.B. Williams
Express was produced with the participation of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the National Film Board of Canada – Filmmaker Assistance Program and the OYA Black Arts Coalition
