The phenomenon of BBC series AbFab is something that has spread far beyond its unsuspecting roots as a French & Saunders sketch. Lauded for its uncensored brevity, AbFab in many ways has had a cultural impact and the way we see women in Television and Film. After a successful initial run in the early to mid ’90s and revivals thereafter, its latest incarnation comes in Film form as an international release, Absolutely Fabulous The Movie. Director Mandie Fletcher returns and Jennifer Saunders not only produces and stars, but pens also.
When hopes of a book deal for her Autobiography fall through, notorious publicist Edina Monsoon (Saunders) must regroup as cash and interest in her agency dwindles. Catching wind of supermodel Kate Moss seeking representation, Edina and her partner-in-crime Patsy (Joanna Lumley) must divert the competition and do it quick. Now in their 60s, they are driven more than ever to thrive in times of fading relevancy. In a freak accident while attending the mega bash of hot designer Huki Muki, Edina unintentionally pushes Kate Moss off a balcony into the water. When her body fails to be recovered, a presumed-guilty Edina and Patsy go into hiding. Together with the former’s granddaughter Lola (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness), they escape to Cannes in true to fab form, embarking on new lives as Edina is determined not to go to prison. How long though before the self-indulgent Edina gets spotted and must take responsibility for her actions?
Let’s be clear, Absolutely Fabulous The Movie was made for its legions of fans and with that in mind, it succeeds on the whole as a campy, twisty, soapy, darkly-humorous romp. It is ridiculous, over-the-top and appropriately biting and heartless. It being any other way wouldn’t be true to its sassy brand. Satirizing much of the superficiality its characters live and breathe, the Film pushes the boundaries even further than its Television roots. Although it all unfolds a little too conveniently, with some central familial storylines (its one tiny glimmer of heart) skimped-on in favour of crude laughs, the Movie both caters to devout fans and also introduces itself with enough spunk to appeal to a new generation unfamiliar with the AbFab legacy. And let’s not forget that dizzying display of celebrity cameos from supermodels of now to Mad Men to Spice Girls!
Fox Searchlight release ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS THE MOVIE Friday, July 22, 2016.
Review by Siobhán Rich for Mr. Will Wong
What if we made a Movie where every shot was a piece of art the audience would covet? What if we made a Movie where every other line foreshadowed the bleak truth about to unfold on the screen? What if we made a movie about beautiful people who weren’t self-effacing or awkward but were confident of their place on the beauty food chain? What if we made The Neon Demon?
Nicolas Winding Refn’s (Drive, Only God Forgives) latest Film is a fascinating study of the narcissism, jealousy, and depravity that fuel the shallow industries that make up Los Angeles. Jesse (Elle Fanning) is introduced to the audience as a bloody corpse perched upon a couch as camera clicks sound ominously in the background. After the photoshoot, Jesse begins the process of cleaning the fake blood off her skin as Jena Malone’s Ruby watches through a reflection in the mirror. A quick friendship forms and Jesse accompanies Ruby to a party where they meet with Sarah and Gigi (Abbey Lee and Bella Heathcote), interchangeable blonde models who evaluate the fresh meat and quickly dismiss her ability to become competition.
What follows is a twisty dive into the well-lit world of L.A. modeling scene tropes. Including the expected cattle-calls replete with bra and panty wearing models and photoshoots run by creepy casting couch photographers who demand closed sets. And the unexpected rapey motel owner (Keanu Reeves) and necrophilia.
Much like the the modeling industry itself, The Neon Demon is beautiful on the outside and initially shocking but in the end has little more depth than an empty pool. The script by Refn, Mary Laws and Polly Stenham strives to be almost witty in its constant foreshadowing with references to Films like The Shining and lines like “Anything worth having hurts a little.” Thankfully for Refn, the occasionally heavy-handed script is paired with a score by Cliff Martinez that evokes both EDM disco raves and haunting trips into the shadows.
The highlight of the Film is the devolution of Fanning’s character from pastel-wearing, “deer in the headlights” innocent who hesitates to lie about her age, into a jaded high-heeled succubus whose ability to enthrall men makes her an object of lust and loathing. In a final moment of self-awareness, she confronts Ruby with the knowledge that her power was not found on a catwalk but had been recognized within her at a young age, “You know what my mother used to call me? Dangerous.”
After premiering at Cannes earlier this year, The Neon Demon set tongues wagging with critics divided on whether it was a macabre masterpiece or provocative fluff. The truth is perhaps somewhere in the middle landing short of Lynchian genius but far exceeding B-Movie brilliance. Audiences are sure to be drawn in by the A-list cast, but will leave confident they have seen one of the most beautifully-realized Films of the year.
D Films opens THE NEON DEMON on Friday, June 24, 2016.
Review by Jonathan Godfrey for Mr. Will Wong
Yorgos Lanthimos is a festival circuit favorite. He’s been received well at the Berlin, Venice, Cannes and Toronto festivals. With regards to the latter, the Greek director screened his first English feature there last September. The Lobster, a Film similar to his previous efforts in its ability to make the offbeat and abstract approachable for a wider audience.
The Lobster takes place in a dystopian world. Inhabitants of the City must have a mate in order to retain citizenship. If at any point they fail to keep a partner they are sent to the Hotel. At the Hotel they are given incentives to pair up with a fellow guest. They have six weeks to succeed, or they can extend their stay by hunting down Loners in the Woods. If their stay concludes without a match they are transformed into the Animal of their choosing.
Colin Farrell plays David, who has been sent to the Hotel after his wife leaves him. Upon his arrival he is asked what Animal he’d like to be if he is unsuccessful. David replies that he would like to be a Lobster due to their long life and virility. This insight is key to understanding the oddities that occur thereafter.
David tries desperately to find a match, but after a particular pairing goes awry he flees to join the Loners. There in the woods he meets a short-sighted woman (Rachel Weisz) who steals his heart. The trouble is Loners have rules of all their own, and coupling is an absolute no-no. The clandestine love affair leads the story through the Woods, City and Hotel in an effort to bring clarity through obscurity.
Both Farrell and Weisz are excellent at delivering the dry and humorous script. So is Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman, Léa Seydoux and John C. Reilly. In addition to the excellent cast the Film is picturesque, particularly during the Woods sequences. Shot in Ireland, The Lobster extends one’s appreciation for the lush wilderness that flourishes there. It also sheds light on luxury resort Parknasvilla which acts as the Film’s Hotel. Lanthimos and his team of Greek artisans prove they have an eye for beauty, as well as the means to shape a story that is both out there and introspective. If you’re looking for something enjoyable that is off the beaten path than be sure to see The Lobster.
Mongrel Media release THE LOBSTER Friday, March 25, 2016.

Remstar Films and Mr. Will want to give Readers a chance to win on DVD a copy of the Film which had Audiences at TIFF ’14 in a standing ovation, while also receiving an Award at the Cannes Film Festival too!
Official Synopsis for PRIDE:
Based on a true story, the film depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984, at the outset of what would become the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. The National Union of Mineworkers was reluctant to accept the group’s support due to the union’s public relations’ worries about being openly associated with a gay group, so the activists instead decided to take their donations directly to Onllwyn, a small mining village in Wales — resulting in an alliance between the two communities. The alliance was unlike any seen before but was successful.
PRIDE stars Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, Andrew Scott, George MacKay, Joseph Gilgun and Ben Schnetzer.

After wowing the world of Cinema with 2010’s Oscar-nominated Animal Kingdom, Australian Director/Writer David Michôd returns with confident Dystopian Drama, The Rover. Once again exploring themes of Brotherhood and betrayal within the Family, he brings out the big guns in a high-profile pair of Actors at the forefront, Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. Michôd and Actor Joel Edgerton – who co-wrote the story – tell a grim post-Apocalyptic Tale of survival following an economic collapse, which sees people migrating to Australia where oddly only American currency is accepted and any bit of dependence can lead to one’s demise.
After having his car stolen, Eric (Pearce) spends much of the Movie trying to reclaim it from Archie (David Field), Caleb (Tawanda Manyimo) and Henry (Scoot McNairy) whom had taken it out of desperation while fleeing the scene of a crime. Rey (Pattinson) is the disabled younger brother of Henry and originally a member of the criminal Quartet, mocked and left behind for dead. Eric crosses paths with Rey, holding him hostage, persistent in prying information, which might help him locate the Thieves. We learn Rey and Henry in their southern drawls had migrated over from America to seek jobs in mining, one of the few thriving industries left following the Collapse. Along the way, it is unveiled that Eric too has a dark history he had buried in the past. In some ways, Eric and Rey build a brother-like bond in Henry‘s absence and ultimately we are taken along a journey in the barren Australian Outback, understated and breathtakingly cinematic thanks to some fine work from Natasha Braier. Will Eric succeed in getting back his car? What will result in Rey and Henry coming face-to-face after an irreparable betrayal? Most of all, amidst times of uncertainty and a New World Order, what will it take to survive?
Early buzz coming out of Cannes has pegged Pattinson‘s performance as being “career-defining” and in a celebrated career commercially – thanks to the Box Office Record-shattering success commercially from the Twilight Franchise – surprisingly the reception is imbalanced critically still. This will be known as the Film that silences his Naysayers. Of all the Characters in this Tale, his naïveté and vulnerability give this stark backdrop a dimension of humanism. That being said, he disappears completely into Rey and it is impossible not to feel sympathy. Pearce is rarely not on-point and he unflinchingly is fierce here, hardened by tough times. We spend much of the Film pondering the mystery behind him. For what the Film isn’t in terms of action and excitement, The Rover more than makes up for in its engaging slow-burn of a ride.
eOne Films release The Rover in Toronto on Friday, June 20, 2014. Additional cities to follow.
NOTE: FINAL NUMBERS TO COME
It was a battle of the Sequels this weekend at the Box Office and prevailing just like its Predecessor was Sony Pictures’ 22 Jump Street which brought in $62 million. By comparison, the first Film in the Franchise opened back in 2012 with $36 million, this time around doubling its take. Critics have been kind, giving the Action-Comedy a great 83% on the Tomatometer, while Audiences also responded strongly with an A-CinemaScore.
A valiant second is How to Train Your Dragon 2 for 20th Century Fox, opening with $52 million at the Box Office! The Film which got a bit of a boost recently from Star America Ferrera‘s Red Carpet incident involving a Prankster at Cannes, got great reviews from Critics tallying 92% on the Tomatometer, and an equally strong A CinemaScore. Its 2010 Predecessor by comparison debuted with $41 million, easily besting the performance of that one.
Disney’s Maleficent continues to ride high in its third week with $20 million this weekend, normally enough for the number one spot some weekends, but good enough for third against the current slate of Blockbuster releases.
The Fault in our Stars opened atop the Box Office last weekend, but slips to fourth spot this weekend with $19 million for 20th Century Fox. It already has grossed $85 million across North America.
Edge of Tomorrow in its second week out accounts for the fifth spot at the Box Office with $16 million for Warner Bros., cumulatively earning $56 million domestically.
X-Men: Days of Future Past finds itself in sixth spot with $9 million for 20th Century Fox also in its its fourth week out, just surpassing the $200 million mark this week in these parts.
Chef rounds out the Top Ten with $2.1 million in its sixth week out in a limited number of theatres. To date, it has grossed $14 million.
Separated by misfortune and reunited by determination, The Immigrant is a remarkable Tale of two Catholic Polish Sisters, Ewa (Marion Cotillard) and Magda (Angela Sarafyan). Upon arriving in America seeking a new life with the help of their Family, we witness Ewa‘s impoverished and grueling journey which sees her forced into a life of prostitution, separated from her ailing Sister who is quarantined for Lung Disease. Along the way, Ewa is cared for by the volatile Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix). She however, becomes partial to his Illusionist Cousin, Emil (Jeremy Renner) and a complicated web is weaved as Bruno falls for Ewa. The Film, directed by James Gray, recalls stories he had been told by his Grandparents about their experiences settling in America in the ’20s.
After debuting in Cannes last year to acclaim, The Immigrant quietly almost has been forgotten, but those of us in Toronto and Vancouver now will have a chance to see it in Limited Release. Highlighted by outstanding performances from its Trio of Stars, the Film without ever getting lost in graphic melodrama, presents its Leads in as humanistic a way as possible amidst grim circumstances.
Phoenix masterfully takes his manipulative Bruno and somehow through it all makes us want to see his redemption, while Renner charms at every opportunity as Ewa‘s advocate and ally. Cotillard unflinchingly is committed, disappearing into the psyche of a scarred Woman, driven to untangle her way through endless setbacks and betrayals to find her beloved Sister.
Exquisitely-styled, The Immigrant certainly is a cathartic experience – a Story which both needs to be seen and heard.
eOne Films release THE IMMIGRANT in Toronto and Vancouver, Friday, June 6, 2014.
