THE REVENANT after giving STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS a run for its money last weekend, settles for second spot with $31.4 million for 20th Century Fox, benefiting from a boost as it led both the Golden Globes last Sunday and Oscar nominations announced Thursday. It should cross the $100-million-mark by early this week domestically.
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS lands in third this weekend with $24 million for Disney. It has made $860 million over five weeks in North America.
13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI, the latest from Michael Bay, opens in fourth with $16 million for Paramount Pictures. It pays at 2,839 theatres and gets a A CinemaScore, which undoubtedly will help in terms of word of mouth. Critics also gave it a passing 60% on the Tomatometer.

It took four weeks for it to happen, but we finally have an opponent that gave STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS a run for its money. Barely. For those of you who thought STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS was finished its Box Office reign, THINK AGAIN! The gargantuan force continues to destroy competitors, this weekend bringing-in $90 million from 4,134 theatres for Disney. This places the Film at $741 million thus far in its North American run, zooming right past TITANIC and JURASSIC WORLD, which before were second and third for all-time domestic records behind AVATAR which grossed $760.5 million. This latest STAR WARS installment looks a cinch to surpass the latter quite soon.

Synopsis:
In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…
