R&B superstar Kehlani is in town tonight for a sold-out show at Rebel as part of her SweetSexySavage tour. Making time for her beloved Toronto fans with a last-minute appearance at Sephora Eaton Centre to promote her Make Up For Ever collaboration, Kehlani x Aqua XL.
Hundreds of fans queued as early as 6 AM today for a wristband to meet the friendly Grammy-nominated Singer-Songwriter from Oakland, who had plenty of hugs in store. Donning some of the hyper-colourful looks seen in promotional pieces for her collaboration, Kehlani arrived at the venue fashionably late and met as many of her fans as time permitted. She even brought her puppy Franklin on tour, although we didn’t get a chance to see him! 🐶
Earlier in the day she attended a brunch for Make Up For Ever Canada staff, just part of her jam-packed day which also includes an afterparty.

Let’s be real – R&B just isn’t what it used to be. Hence when we were told by a friend to check out Kehlani‘s debut disc SweetSexySavage, we were expecting it to sound like every other Neo-Soul/Alternative-R&B album out in the past decade. But really it isn’t. Lead single Distraction‘s TLC influence is an unavoidable comparison. Even the album’s title itself rings of that Trio’s 1994 Grammy-winning disc CrazySexyCool. Many Millennials however won’t know that. Kehlani‘s debut disc possesses sensuality, soul and an understated Gen Z confidence that keeps us wanting to re-examine it. It’s fresh.
The 21-year-old Singer/Songwriter from Oakland, California originally aspired to be a dancer, curtailed by injury, but has managed plenty fine as a musician, making a critical splash with her 2014 Mixtape You Should be Here. SweetSexySavage however, is considered technically Kehlani‘s debut.

Kehlani is definitely one to keep a tab on. She’s in Toronto early June for a show at Rebel.
