#INTERVIEW: ANDREW BUSH & KAYLA LORETTE ON “ROLLER TOWN”

At the turn of the Disco Era comes the birth of Arcades and Video Games. As a Duo of Arcade-peddling Mobsters threaten to destroy Disco and the Town of Brookfield’s obsession with Roller Skating, only expert Roller Skater Leo (Mark Little) – the unlikeliest of Heroes – can save the day. He must however, call upon the help of the Girl he loves in the Mayor’s Daughter Julia (Kayla Lorette), threatening to tear her apart from her Family as her Father finds himself siding with the Mobsters in their cause to abolish Roller Skating completely.

Canadian Film has a new Voice in Comedy Troupe Picnicface‘s debut Feature Film, Roller Town, directed by Andrew Bush. Although on paper it might be easy to dismiss it as something absurd, even I found myself laughing out loud at many of the Comedy’s jokes.  I can say in the v. least that I cannot get the visual of a Double Dicker out of my head, triggering occasional bursts of laughter for no apparent reason.

Shot in Halifax over the course of seven days on a Micro-budget, Bush and his fellow Picnicface Family Members including Mark Vrooman, Mark Little, Evany Rosen, Bill Wood, Brian Macquarrie, Kyle Dooley and Cheryl Hann, were faced with the greatest challenge of having a strong foundation built in Sketch, but having to transition this onto the Big Screen.  Bush tells me, “When  shooting our Sketches, we were shooting on our time without a crew around us.  You can’t spend the time to mess around and figure it out on, you’ve got to get it done.”.

Already having toured the Festival Circuit receiving warm reception at the Atlantic Film Festival and even more so recently at the Fantastia Film Festival in Montreal, Bush and Lorette have modest hopes.  “I made this Movie for me and when I was watching movies in the basement with my friends like Ghostbusters and The Holy Grail – not to say that my Movie is at that level – but I’d love if people told just one friend about a scene or two they loved and if that person told another person”, says Bush. “I’d like a viral Film.”.
