Adam Sandler’s back! After having filmed in Toronto over the years, including projects like Pixels and visits to TIFF for acclaimed Uncut Gems and Hotel Transylvania, Sandler is here in the City again but this time as a Producer. The Netflix Feature is an Adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s Novel “You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah!“.
Stacy Friedman is getting ready for one of the most important events of her young life––her bat mitzvah! All she wants is the perfect BCBG dress to wear, her friends by her side, and her biggest crush ever, AndyGoldfarb, to dance with her (and maybe even make out with her on the dance floor). But Stacy’s well-laid plans soon start to fall apart….Her stressed-out mother forces her to buy a hideous sequined dress that makes her look like the bride of Frankenstein. Her mitzvahs are not going well at all. And then the worst thing in the entire world happens––causing Stacy to utter the words that will wreak complete havoc on her social life…You are SO not invited to my bat mitzvah!
While most of the production thus far has ranged from spots outside the downtown core in Port Credit and Oakville, Sandler has been spotted in his time off plenty around Yorkville – just this past weekend he was at ONE at Hazelton Hotel – and he loves to play Basketball, so you might very well see him on a court around town playing with the locals!
Filming made its way up to my neck of the woods last week and there was no way we weren’t going to check it out! We love Sandler and have met him a few times over the years and he’s always been amazingly-nice. And he still hasn’t changed, stopping quickly on his way home for the day for a Selfie with beanie and I! We spotted him wrapping for the day on-set, where we heard he took Selfies with the kids on-set!
Sandler typically is dressed for comfort, t-shirt, sneakers and basketball shorts and we love that he just keeps it real. Love the rainbow theme going on here with his top and sneakers!
“You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah!” is expected to wrap mid-August 2022.
We love Adam Sandler showing his dramatic chops. Check-out this Teaser for Basketball Drama, HUSTLE coming soon to Netflix.
Stanley Sugerman’s (Adam Sandler) love for basketball is unparalleled, but the travel weary Philadelphia 76ers scout who has higher ambitions of being a coach remains stuck on the road looking for the next unknown talent. His search around the world leads him to Spain, when he discovers Bo Cruz (NBA player Juancho Hernangómez), an incredible streetball player with a troubled past. Stanley and Bo connect on and off the court, with their passion for the game and as loving family men who want to prove they can win, in basketball and in life. With the support of Stanley’s wife, Teresa (Queen Latifah), can the underdogs come out on top? HUSTLE, an inspirational drama, co-stars Ben Foster, Kenny Smith, Anthony Edwards, and Tobias Harris, is directed by Jeremiah Zagar and is produced by Sandler, Allen Covert, Joe Roth, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Zack Roth, LeBron James and Maverick Carter.

Halloween is just around the corner and Netflix is ready to get us in the spirit with HUBIE HALLOWEEN!
In the infamous town of Salem, Massachusetts, big-hearted Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) regularly spends Halloween making sure his fellow residents celebrate the holiday safely and keep the childish shenanigans in check, though they don’t often thank him for it. Hubie is mocked for being overly cautious and still living with his mom (June Squibb), plus he’s called the police so often over the years that Officer Steve Downing (Kevin James) actively avoids him.
Also starring: Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Maya Rudolph, Rob Schneider, Kenan Thompson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Chiklis, Tim Meadows, Noah Schnapp, Paris Berelc, China Anne McClain and Shaquille O’Neal. Steve Brill (Little Nicky, Walk of Shame) directs.

While the 2020 FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS didn’t see a clean sweep for any particular Film, what made it most unique was the split of awards among deserving titles which may have been overseen on other circuits. Taking home top honours at this year’s Awards, held once again at Santa Monica Pier, was Lulu Wang‘s THE FAREWELL. The Film won Best Feature and Best Supporting Actress with Zhao Shuzhen, who sadly was unable to celebrate due to the Coronavirus situation in China. Wang‘s partner Barry Jenkins was with her to support her, showing his pride backstage.
UNCUT GEMS which surprisingly for many failed to garner an Academy Award nomination, performed very well at the Spirit Awards, rewarding Best Director to Co-Directors TheSafdie Brothers and also Best Male Lead (Adam Sandler). Sandler gave a spirited speech delivered completely as a different character, before thanking his family, while the Safdie Brothers both delivered a comical speech which saw them talking over one another.
Much like the rest of Awards Season, Renée Zellweger took home Best Female Lead for her work in JUDY, marking her first Spirit Award win after three nominations. Returning Host Aubrey Plaza delivered an opening number, a version of Judy Garland‘s Get Happy with hilarious lyrics, delivering the chuckles once again.
Watch it here:
MARRIAGE STORY also saw recognition with the Film’s team being awarded the Robert Altman Award, along with its Director/Writer Noah Baumbach who was also awarded Best Screenplay.Baumbach gave thanks to his partner Greta Gerwig, telling the audience “Even though she made a Movie (Little Women) too expensive to be here, she is just as independent as any of us.”. This was Baumbach‘s first Spirit Award.

Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a jeweller and compulsive gambler. He cannot seem to keep any of the money or collateral he has, frequently selling it for bet money – even if the collateral does not belong to him. And after Howard acquires a rock filled with precious gemstones, things quickly go from bad to worse.
Uncut Gems is not for everyone and is easily one of the most divisive films at the Festival. Directing duo Benny and Josh Safdie have a distinct style, and they infuse this one with the same look, feel and tone of their Robert Pattinson vehicle, Good Time. What they create is a film that runs over two hours, but somehow only manages to feel 45-minutes long. It moves chaotically and recklessly from scene to scene, gradually ratcheting up the tension to unbearable levels. Just watching the shenanigans and situations Sandler’s character Howard finds himself in is ridiculously-exhausting, but somehow just as wildly exhilarating. The Supporting Cast is solid (inexplicably including NBA star Kevin Garnett), but Sandler is in his own other world here. He plays into some of his classic archetypes but also grounds himself in a totally foreign space, bringing out nuances you would never think possible. I just wish the film had a bit more substance to it.
UNCUT GEMS screens during TIFF at the following times:
Monday September 9, 9:15pm @ Princess of Wales
Tuesday September 10, 10:30am @ Elgin Theatre
Saturday September 14, 1:00pm @ Ryerson Theatre
Sunday September 15, 6:00pm @ Ryerson Theatre

Synopsis: Hotel Transylvania owner Count Dracula (Adam Sandler) realizes he is lonely and decides it might be time for him to try and find love again after spending the last hundred years working non-stop. He attempts online dating but has no luck finding someone special. His daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) recognizes how tired and lonely her father is and takes it upon herself to both give him both a vacation and a chance at finding love.
She convinces Dracula to accompany her and the rest of their monster family on a luxury cruise so he can take a break from making everyone else’s vacations so perfect and take one himself for once. Although he’s initially reluctant, Dracula eventually agrees.
The group indulges in all the amenities and activities the luxurious ship has to offer. Dracula finds himself attracted to the ship’s beautiful cruise director, Ericka (Kathryn Hahn), who reciprocates his feelings. However, as it turns out, she is the great-granddaughter of vampire-hunter Van Helsing, which leads Mavis to question Ericka‘s intentions.
