Never mind that in classic Judd Apatow fashion it clocks-in at almost three hours, This is 40 is pure comedic gold. Gaining most of its laughs through expletives, exaggerated threats of violence and bursts of temper, the brilliant Writer/Director takes us on a tour-de-force journey of what it means for a successful Couple to terms with their age, in this sorta Sequel to 2007’s Knocked Up.
Utilizing the talents of his Wife Leslie Mann, reprising the memorable role of Debbie and his Daughters Maude and Iris, Apatow re-teams also with longtime Friend Paul Rudd, who once again plays Husband/Father Pete. Although they have a gorgeous home, a Lexus, a BMW and dream careers, things aren’t rosy for this family of four. With Debbie in denial that she’s turned 40 and Pete‘s impending 40th Birthday Celebration just around the corner, the Couple is forced to re-evaluate not only their own relationship but their relationships with their own Family members as they are faced with some financial strains.
What draws us into This is 40 are Apatow‘s complexly-written characters. Yes, Debbie and Pete have their own respective flaws of character, but they are lovable enough through it all that when their love ever-so-persistently is put to the test, we always still want them together. Although acknowledged as being a notch below Apatow‘s best work, what redeems this Comedy are some quick and tricky turns from irritating to endearing, which throw the audience off-center just enough to stay interested throughout. Mann shines brightest and her two Daughters are fantastic despite their lack of professional acting experience.
Surprise appearances from Funnywoman Melissa McCarthy – who delivers some of the Film’s most memorable laughs in just one scene during Credits, Megan Fox cast perfectly as a sexy Shopgirl and some great work from Albert Brooks as a spongy Dad, only are more to love about This is 40.
Universal Pictures releases This is 40, now in theatres. Apatow & Mann recently were in Toronto. Click here to see some Snaps I got of them.
