Writer/Director Dylan Meyer’s Stoner Comedy THE WRONG GIRLS is a whacky escape highlighted by great chemistry between its two leads, Frankie (Kristen Stewart) and Molly (Alia Shawkat), but is that enough to keep its audience locked-in?
The Film centers on these two roommates who are barely getting by. In a case of mistaken identity, Frankie is handed a briefcase that contains a mysterious drug, which she and Molly consume – only to develop superpowers like telepathy and telekinesis. Upon learning that the drug has gotten into this duo’s hands, they find themselves caught up in a dangerous chase.
THE WRONG GIRLS has the potential to become a bit of a cult hit, and at its best it functions successfully as a Buddy Comedy, that is goofy in the right ways and never for a second taking itself seriously. Despite it feeling uneven and the laughs not being evenly dispersed – after all, it is trying to make sense of being high – it gets a hall pass. Stewart and Shawkat are a perfect pairing and it is fun seeing them paired here in a vehicle that allows them to flex new muscles. We just wish it was a bit more memorable. We’d love to see the duo paired together again but with material that will allow them to fully excel.
Elevation Pictures release THE WRONG GIRLS, now in theatres.
