Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Thanks to Director Ken Cunningham and Writer David Shayne, the Holidays have arrived early this year, and audiences finally get a worthy Star Wars Special in the form of LEGO! The best part of The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is that the 45-minute Feature is non-canonical, so anything and everything can happen and it certainly packs a fun Holiday punch. While the Voice Cast (for the most part) here is played by talent who did not originate their roles, nonetheless, it is still a blast.
The Special is set during what is called Life Day and Rey (Helen Sadler) is trying to teach Finn (Omar Miller) about the force but she has difficulties being a great Jedi Trainer. She enters a temple with a force crystal with BB-8 that allows her to break the rules of time and space and travel throughout the Star Wars timeline, getting to see how her master Luke (Eric Bauza) and his master master Yoda (Tom Kane) were able to use the force and train to become the Jedi Luke ends up being. Rey’s biggest obstacle to overcome, aside from learning all there is to The Force, is making it back to present day for Life Day.
What makes The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special enjoyable, is while it is a Star Wars clip show on the surface, it does include some ‘what if’ scenarios that fans have pondered, while also staying true to the characters we already know and love. There is a lot of imagination and re-innovation regarding the Star Wars universe as well throughout the Special. As well, the Voice Cast bring their own unique takes on the characters delivering something fun and memorable for the audience.
This is a Special that will connect friends and families across the galaxies far, far away.
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special premieres on Disney+ November 17, 2020.
