Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
The Sequel has finally arrived and itâs a tail-wagging good time!
In the newest addition, Max and his pet friends get to face new adventures, at home and away. Max (Patton Oswalt) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) leave for vacation and are faced with a different lifestyle on a farm. Gidget (Jenny Slate) experiences the lifestyle differences between being a dog and cat. And Snowball (Kevin Hart) has the chance to put his âsuperheroâ pet power to action when he sets out to free an abused circus tiger. The one thing all their individual stories have in common is that they all must face their fear.
What makes The Secret Life Of Pets 2 all-around joyous family fun is the parallels it draws to our own pets. One of the most familiar scenes is the reactions which each animal has in the waiting room at the vet’s. In doing this, audiences feel connected to the pet characters because they see theirs within them. Then there are the connections the Writers make with ourselves. In this case, itâs the theme of overcoming ones fear in order to grow and accomplish your goals.
Majority of the Cast is back and there are some new additions. Out of the old Cast, Hart and Slate standouts as Snowball and Gidget. Both bring ample amounts of energy to their adorable animated pets. Oswalt is the new voice of Max and he has the perfect mix of anxiety and determination to measure his pet out. The new members to the gang are Tiffany Haddish and Harrison Ford, cast perfectly, both whom make big barks as the fearless Daisy and alpha dog Rooster respectively.
Overall, itâs the important theme, the hilarious inner monologues of each pet character, and their comedic rhetoric that make this Film a must-see for the whole family.
Universal Pictures Canada releases THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 on Friday, June 7, 2019.
