Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Two strangers end up on a non-commercial plane together to avoid missing engagements due to weather conditions, what is the worst thing that could happen?
The Movie focuses on Ben (Idris Elba) who joins Alex (Kate Winslet) on her crusade to make her wedding, while the former has to make his surgery in the morning by taking a non-commercial aircraft. All is fine until the pilot suffers a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes in the mountains with few signs of life around. Injured and alone in the mountains with no reception to call for help, Ben and Alex must work together to try and stay alive to overcome the challenge of a lifetime.
What makes The Mountain Between Us work is the respective performances from Elba and Winslet. However, the downside is where they are forced to bond with one other and create a relationship between their characters. They never really quite click, setting-out on this adventure together only because they believe they had no other choice. They’re both so wrapped-up in getting to their destination that they don’t take a second to consider the consequences. The inevitable romance that blooms between Winslet and Elba feels forced even though individually they shine, and if it weren’t for a lack of chemistry the Film would have been much different.
The Mountain Between Us will play to the crowd who come expecting romance and if there was someone who has mastered the Disaster Romance genre well, Winslet is your woman.
20th Century Fox Canada release THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US on Friday, October 6, 2017.
