The story centers around 70-year-old retired and bored Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) who wants to find something exciting to do with his life. When he applies for a senior internship position at a new fashion website, he gets it. The creator and boss of the company is the very busy Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), who carries a reputation for being hard to work for by her employees. Ben is the “unlucky” intern who gets to work personally for Jules. From there the two form an unlikely friendship that teaches the characters and audience much about life.

Hathaway is entirely convincing as a busy working mother who has a stay-at-home husband to take care of their child. De Niro is magnetic and humorous, and makes the audience want to be best friends with his character. The two of them may seem like an unlikely pair on paper, but the screen lights up when they’re together. The friendship that blossoms between Jules and Ben is unique but never unbelievable, thanks to clear direction and writing by Nancy Meyers. Meyers’ script shows how friendship is something that happens organically and is a necessity to help us move through life. Without that great chemistry between Hathaway and De Niro, we’re not sure the Film’s message would translate as well as it does. Meyers definitely hit the jackpot with these two Oscar winners.

What makes this Film unique is how the main characters generally love to work. Often enough, characters can be projected as wishing they could retire sooner or that they don’t want to work, which isn’t always the case. Ben is willing to work for free and Ostin is providing for her family by running her  company by herself, no matter how exhausting the feat.

The Intern will gives audiences something refreshing and inspiring because we see no judgement in the working mother and stay- at-home father dynamic and to progress as a society we need to not see this as a point of contention in families.
