Following the smash success of 2016’s SING, comes Sequel SING 2 – right in time for the Holidays! Writer/Director Garth Jennings returns once again here as do several of the star-studded voices who graced the first film. Fans of SING will find many of the same things to love about this follow-up.
At the heart of the story is Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) who owns the Moon Theatre and wants to propel his venue and star gang of performers to the next level, trying to impress mogul Jimmy Crystal. Crystal gives them a chance on their promisethat th ey can get reclusive Rock Star Clay Calloway (Bono) out to perform at their show. The new venue and promised show pose challenges for its stars. Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) due to her fear of heights, downgrades to a supporting role in the show, her part given to Crystal‘s daughter Porsha (Halsey). Johnny (Taron Egerton) has to get his choreography down for the show and befriends Street Dancer Nooshy (Letitia Wright), but has work to do regaining his confidence. Ash (Scarlett Johansson) and Buster have the toughest task of all though, convincing Clay Calloway to make a comeback!
The visuals are spectacular, especially in the grand finale, and as always it is fun seeing new sides of this brilliant Cast. McConaughey carries much of the weight of this with his charisma and charm and taps into Buster’s vulnerability in a way that has the audience rooting for him to succeed. I’ve said it time and again, Egerton is a real standout vocally, and we are in awe how he doesn’t yet have a Solo Album. We wish the Film gave him even more of a platform to shine. And Johansson shows her versatility and range as Ash, and we hear a noticeable improvement in her singing.
The world needs a bit more cheer right now and while SING 2 might not be for everyone, those who love what the Franchise has become synonymous with, will be pleased. We too all are in our own ways staging our own comebacks in life, just like Clay Calloway. We’re sure this won’t be the last we hear from this gang!
Universal Pictures Canada release SING 2 December 22, 2021.
