#REVIEW: “SHE CAME TO ME”

Though ultimately a Romantic Comedy, Rebecca Miller‘s SHE CAME TO ME takes some time and patience to find itself.

Steven (Peter Dinklage) is a Composer dealing with Writers’ Block and after a breakdown with the failure of his last Opera, he is trying to pick up the pieces again.  Though supportive, his wife Patricia (Anne Hathaway) thrives in order – no shoes in the house, everything must be squeaky clean.  Peter by chance meets a Tugboat Captain named Katrina (Marisa Tomei) and the two form an unlikely bond that invigorates Steven‘s creativity once again. But how does he reconcile this new muse in his life with his career and his family?  Furthermore, we meet Julian (Evan Ellison), son of Steven and Patricia, who happens to be dating Tereza (Harlow Jane), daughter Magdalena, the family’s Housekeeper.  This causes some issues and the two young lovers must perservere under pressure to prove their love is true.

A lot going on right?  Miller comes with some interesting ideas which ultimately feel disjointed. While the Film is warm and sweet in its own dark way, we are steered so far off course that we wonder if we are ever setting back on the course we set out on.   The Ensemble are great and Dinklage and Tomei do a great job making us root for their whacky romance, and while Hathaway, who serves as Executive Producer as well, is a scenestealer, it feels as though she is in a completely different story of her own.  Tereza and Julian are an interesting look at how class plays into modern love,  but again, feels like a separate story altogether.  Again, all the ingredients are there, though the measures are slightly off in this off-kilter Rom-Com.
