#REVIEW: “OBSESSION”
Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
Be careful what you wish for.
That’s the blaring warning of Filmmaker Curry Barker’s exceptional horror feature Obsession. It follows timid Bear (Michael Johnson), a lovesick introvert, who’s silently pining after his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Bear’s shyness get’s the best of him, leaving him paralyzed to confess his true feelings. Instead, he makes an irreversible wish and breaks the mysterious “One Wish Willow” toy he got at a shop. To his surprise, he gets exactly what he wished for…but quickly learns that some desires may come at a sinister cost.
Obsession is the wildest entertaining ride of the year and delivers on spine-chilling horror. Barker entices audiences with the loveable Bear: a young man to bashful for his own good. Johnson delivers an endearing performance that reminds us of the anxiety that comes along with confessing love. Allowing us to immediately relate to all of his insecurities and fears. Barker opens with a scene reminiscent of the romance genre. After all, that’s what Obsession is: a story of a boy who loves a girl. However, the dark, shadowy cinematography and an early unexpected death remind us that this is no rom-com.
Then Bear makes the wish and Obsession explodes into a gloriously twisted fable on desire and love. Nikki becomes obsessed with Bear, not in the cute way; in the unsettling way. She must spend every second with him. She watches him sleep. She hurts herself when she makes him sad. These situations are reminiscent of ones we’ve heard or experienced ourselves; making them feel all the more horrifying. Barker is a master puppeteer in storytelling. He progresses Nikki’s madness in measured increments from questionable to macabre. Most impressive is Barker and Johnson’s ability to make audiences understand why Bear remains with Nikki. There is always a reason to stay that makes sense.
Then there is the woman herself: Freaky Nikki. Once you see the film, you’ll get the reference. It’s a biting role that requires intense mental and physical control and sacrifice. Navarrette delivers a has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed performance that is going to catapult her into a household name. Her emotional range turns from wholesome to sinister in the blink of an eye, and the terrifying physicality she brings to Nikki is remarkable.
The best way to see Obsession is to go in blind. Then sit back and enjoy the wickedly wild, anxiety and blood-soaked ride through this twisted love fable.
