Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Director Lynn Shelton has some great work to her name, more recently starring in Safety Not Guaranteed and of course directing well-received Your Sister’s Sister. She brings something fresh to the game with her wonderfully-quirky new Film Laggies, which is an unusual take on the Coming of Age story. The Movie stars some formidable talent in Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell.
The Movie focuses on Megan (Keira Knightley) and her quarter-life crisis. She has decided to leave her Boyfriend behind in order to escape the world she has found herself in. She isn’t quite ready to grow-up and accept the responsibilities that come with Adulthood. Along her journey, she hits-up the local Liquor Store and this is where she meets Annika (Moretz), Misty (Kaitlyn Dever) and the rest of their Friends, who urge Megan to purchase some booze for them. Reluctant at first, Megan goes against her better judgment and purchases the alcohol for the Minors. They exchange numbers and become an unlikely group of Friends. This is where things get interesting as Megan calls Annika one night and asks her if it would be okay if she stayed at her house for a week with some half-thought-out excuse. Annika, not knowing any better, agrees and their adventures of a 20-something and a Teen begins.
Craig (Sam Rockwell) meanwhile tries to uncover what ulterior motives exist behind this Friendship. However, with all three Characters becoming intertwined with each others’ lives, their Stories mesh together to create a beautiful symbiosis that we you didn’t see coming.
The performances in Laggies by its two Lead Actresses proved exceptional, seeing them both branch beyond what we’d expect of them. Moretz is truly within her element and genuine, while Knightley and Rockwell also ignite the screen with phenomenal chemistry, truly having fun with it. There’s plenty to identify with for any of you who love your Coming of Age tales!
VVS Films release LAGGIES on Friday, October 24, 2014.
