Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
New Disney+ series Inside Pixar focuses on different aspects of bringing to life a Pixar movie from all different aspects with a focus on upcoming Disney+ exclusive Soul. The first two episodes run at approximately ten minutes each, centering on Kemp Powers who co-wrote and co-directed Soul as well as Deanna Marsigliese who talks about creating characters and animations for Pixar as a whole and not solely Soul.
In our first episode, Kemp Powers talks about the creative process and the experience of writing a Screenplay for a Pixar movie. Powers explains how it is different than writing for any other medium, or any different animation house as Pixar movies are generally in development prior to the full story being finished and fleshed-out. We learn they are writing their Screenplay while the movie is in the early stages of production. He also talked in depth about the beginning of Soul, crossing into some potential spoiler territory (as the Trailers have done a really good job of not revealing all to much about the Movie as a whole). Kemp’s input and insight into the creative process is incredibly interesting to listen to and unpack.
Deanna’s episode is called Art of the Pivot in which she talks about her creative process and how she gets around creative blocks and provides some insight into things she worked on, and what was removed from the final product, Incredibles 2. Some of the things Deanna got to work on were the Edna Mode collection in Incredibles, as well as the designs for the background characters. However, how Deanna explains how she pivots when getting stuck is interesting and insightful.
INSIDE PIXAR arrives on Disney+ Friday November 13, 2020.
