Christmas is almost ruined for the Carver family in CANDY CANE LANE. Chris (Eddie Murphy, who also serves as Executive Producer) loses his job right before the Holidays and channels his energy into winning his neighbourhood’s house decorating competition. Trust me, these families are wild for Christmas! Chris however, unbeknownst to him, strikes a deal with an elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell), which wreaks havoc for all. She casts a spell which, inundates the town with the 12 Days of Christmas (in a destructive way) and the Carver family must overcome their differences and act quickly to save Christmas before it’s too late for everyone.
This is the latest effort from Director Reginald Hudlin (Sidney, Marshall) who comes into this having directed and produced many high-profile productions. This Holiday Comedy leans on some magical CGI to deliver some twisty thrills for the family, giving us a very “PG” Murphy, who has matured into fatherly-type roles since his comeback.
While it has its heart in the right place – a father wanting what’s best for his family and to re-discover his own purpose later in life – it feels a tad long and languid. We would have preferred seeing Murphy let loose and push buttons the way we’ve always loved him for. That fire is lost in the Film’s decision to gear to the middle ground, feeling Video Game-esque. CANDY CANE LANE would also have benefitted from some more care and detail on its villain, Pepper helping us better understand her intention.
Completely harmless, safe for the family to enjoy over the Holidays. Prime Video Canada release CANDY CANE LANE December 1, 2023.
