Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
When secret FBI agent Dusty Crane’s (Taylor John Smith) cover is blown, off-the-books FBI agent Travis Block (Liam Neeson) gets called-in. This is because Block specializes in removing operatives whose covers have been exposed. However, he soon finds himself caught-up in a deadly conspiracy that reaches the top of the FBI. It’s up to Block and Journalist Mira Jones (Emmy Raver-Lampman) to stop the corruption.
For those of you seeking-out Blacklight for Neeson, you won’t be disappointed. His signature hero brand is on full display. Block is an agent with a dark past who’s now trying to do the right thing. It’s a character that’s been done before, however, Neeson makes it fresh.
The heart of the story comes from Block’s desire to leave the FBI and be a hands-on grandfather. This is to make-up for being an absent father to his daughter. Neeson excels at both the physical and emotional aspects of his character. Additionally, he works great with Raver-Lampman who we know from the popular Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. Here she gives a strong performance as an Investigative Journalist.
Blacklight’s action is sprinkled throughout. Director Mark Williams shoots the car chase scenes with energy and the finale is laced with tension. The Film consists of conversations to help the audience understand the corruption happening within the FBI. This exposition is essential for the story but we wish there were a bit more action sequences.
If you’re craving a new Neeson, Blacklight is for you!
