Review by Jonathan Godfrey for Mr. Will Wong
The legend of Ron Burgundy continues, cue the choreographed leap. Yes, though nearly a decade has passed since the Legend began, it is determined to live. In New York City, Ron and Veronica enter the 80’s as successful Co-Anchors, but the good times turn bad quickly. Ron in a pride-filled rage leaves his Family to sulk in his beloved Scotch at Seaworld. What an audacious start, but those familiar with the narrative know that it loves to jump the shark.
Without a question the Sequel is as over-the-top as its Predecessor. The bits, the gags and jokes all push the limitations of contemporary American Comedy. It’s something Writer/Director Adam McKay does rather well. His ability to craft the most ridiculous Characters and Scenarios is almost unprecedented. He knows how to be enchanting, jovial, and thought-provoking all at the same time, and he has an incredible Cast to pull it off.
Suffice it to say that Will Ferrell is yet again a stupendous Lead. His facial expressions, dramatic reactions, and witty delivery help endear him further in our hearts. The Man just knows how to bring a script to life. So do Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and David Koechner. Their supporting roles are paramount in helping Ron get back on the hot-seat as the head of a ground-breaking 24-hour News Station. Rudd especially, as his Character Brian Fantana is a pitch-perfect Straight Man once again.
Christina Applegate helps bring light to the hilarity as well. Not to mention James Marsden, Meaghan Good, and a star-studded list of Cameos. Some of the most notables include Toronto’s very own, Aubrey Drake Graham, as well as Vince Vaughn and the effervescent Marion Cotillard. There’s too many to mention so it’s best you see it for yourself. Prepare your gut for busting, and a set aside a few dollars more for the Blu-ray.
Like the first Film in hopeful Series, this is one you’ll want to watch repeatedly just to hear the jokes delivered, memorize all your favourite lines, and laugh yourself into happiness. Add to that a little insight regarding the decline of quality Journalism and you got yourself some Grade A Edutainment!
With Burgundy back, there is no doubt that this Christmas is going to be holly and jolly. Paramount Pictures release Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues on Wednesday, December 25, 2013.
