We had the pleasure of being paired with the 2026 MAZDA CX-5 GS AWD for a test drive. This family-oriented compact SUV seats five very comfortably and provides great value, practicality and comfort. Powered by a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G 4-cylinder engine, with 187 horsepower, the Mazda CX-5 is perfect for your everyday drives.
But in addition to this, it scores big points in style with a clean, calm cabin. Our Mazda CX-5 GS came in a beautiful Navy Blue Mica with a Pure White interior with Black Leatherette & Cloth upholstery. This, plus an easy-to-navigate 12.9″ Human Machine Interface display, and Google built-in (Google Maps and Google Play), alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. Did we mention its Wireless Charging located strategically under the armrest? You also get two USB-C ports up in front for your passengers. Even its Bose soundsystem speakers (eight) are thoughtfully placed.
Mazda delivers its commitment to safety in critical features like Adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning, plus Smart Brake Support / Smart City Brake Support. It is constantly on the lookout for driver and passenger and ready to protect at all times, especially with the latter feature which is an added step to prevent collisions. Its rearview camera with guidelines make reversing and parallel parking as easy as possible. Above this, you get a comprehensive supplemental restraint system with dual front airbags, front side-impact airbags, and side-curtain airbags that cover both the first and second rows.
We also enjoyed very much having Active Driving Display to lean on when we weren’t sure what the speed limits were when we went on a road trip outside the City. Intermittent Rain-sensing wipers in the front and back also were very intuitive, as was its High Beam Control system which also knew brilliantly when we needed it most driving in the dark.
You get an abundance of cargo space here as well with the Mazda CX-5 GS, with up to 1,882 litres (66.5 cu ft) behind the front row. Rear doors (which are childproof), are designed to open nearly 90 degrees for easier child-seat access, making this a great choice for young families. Its power liftgate give you one less thing to worry about when you’re trying transporting your hauls. This, and proximity entry to boot too!
In terms of fuel economy, the CX-5 does consume approximately 9.9 L/100 km city and 7.9 L/100 km highway, which is average to below average, should this be a deciding factor for you.
All in all, a great, versatile drive at a great price, starting at $39,200 CDN. Learn more here.
