#FUNDRAISING: SHELTER MOVERS CELEBRATE 10-YEAR MILESTONE WITH GALA NOVEMBER 6, 2026

Shelter Movers, Canada’s leading organization providing free moving and storage services to survivors of gender-based violence, celebrates a major milestone this year: 10 years of helping survivors and their families escape abuse without financial barriers. Since 2016, the organization has completed more than 10,000 moves.

In celebration, Shelter Movers is hosting its annual gala, A Moving Affair, on Friday, November 6, 2026, at The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto, marking 10 years of the organization. The evening features a three-course dinner, curated auction, powerful storytelling, and live entertainment honouring the resilience and courage of survivors. All proceeds support Shelter Movers’ national operations.

“As we mark 10 years of Shelter Movers, I think back to that very first call and the belief that something had to change,” says Vicky Sage, Chief Operating Officer of Shelter Movers. “I was there from the beginning, when the idea was just taking shape, and I saw firsthand the determination to make leaving an abusive situation safer and more possible. What started as a small, grassroots response has grown into a national movement, supporting thousands of survivors and their families. But at its heart, the work has never changed. It is about making sure no one has to leave abuse alone, and giving people the safety, support and opportunity to begin again. Ten years later, that is still what drives us forward.”

In 2025 alone, Shelter Movers completed over 1,600 moves. Across the decade, 63 percent of survivors report they would have been forced into debt to pay for their own moves without Shelter Movers’ support, and 93 percent report feeling safe and supported throughout the process. The organization’s 360-plus active volunteers across Canada step in to remove these barriers, one move at a time.
