In recognition of International Sex Worker Rights Day, Maggie’s Toronto Sex Workers Action Project and Sex Professionals of Canada (SPOC) are presenting a special screening of PAYING FOR IT at The Paradise Theatre on March 3, 2025. The event is a fundraiser and community gathering dedicated to amplifying sex worker voices and advocating for their rights.
PAYING FOR IT is a live-action adaptation of Chester Brown’s best-selling graphic novel directed and co-written by Sook-Yin Lee. In addition to the feature film, the evening will showcase two short films by members of the PAYING FOR IT cast: PLEASE LOVE ME by Lea Rose Sebastianis, and THE FIRST INDIGENOUS FEMALE PORNOGRAPHER by Jamie Whitecrow. Whitecrow, who is unable to attend in person, will provide a special pre-recorded message. Sook-Yin Lee and Chester Brown will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A led by Jonathan Valelly, Development Coordinator, HIV & Harm Reduction at Maggie’s. Also speaking at the event will be Valerie Scott of SPOC, Maggie’s new executive director Chandra Ewing, Jonathan Valelly, and International Burly-Q Showgirl and PAYING FOR IT castmember, Tanya Cheex.
Beyond the screenings, the event will feature fundraising opportunities in support of Maggie’s Toronto and SPOC. Community members and attendees will have the opportunity to engage with representatives from these organisations and contribute to their advocacy efforts.
All proceeds from the event will directly support Maggie’s Toronto and SPOC (Sex Professionals of Canada), two essential organisations advocating for sex worker rights and providing crucial services. Maggie’s Toronto, which recently suffered layoffs due to funding cuts, continues to be a lifeline for the community despite past challenges, including a devastating fire two years ago.
