SING MY SONG explores this question by following Barbara “Kayee” Lee, an award-winning broadcast journalist and community advocate, on her decade-long journey to try to find an answer to this question. Lee’s pursuit of her musical dream intertwines with encounters with fellow Asian American and Asian Canadian singer-songwriters including the Far East Movement, Alfa Garcia, Kevin So and Umi Hsu. This feature-length documentary challenges the Model Minority Myth, unraveling its dual nature – celebrated for excellence in classical music yet sidelined as not “cool enough for mainstream popularity.
