Prime Video announced today the start of production for Vitrerie Joyal, the previously announced Amazon Original series from one of Quebec’s favourite comedians, Martin Matte. The series will launch on Prime Video in 2026.
“This project is very personal and important to me. I’m thrilled to bring this story, inspired by my father’s life, to life. Vitrerie Joyal will be a dramatic comedy, and even very dramatic in parts. I’ve rarely drawn so deeply within myself to write,” says Martin Matte. “I’m thrilled to be working with Prime Video to share this tale of a quintessentially Quebec family with audiences.”
The comedy-drama, Vitrerie Joyal, takes us to the heart of Quebec in the ’90s, a pivotal period when the province oscillated between tradition and modernity. Through the destiny of a first-generation Quebec entrepreneur, who started from nothing to build a prosperous business, an entire era is revealed, between ambition, hope and disillusionment.
The series will be filmed entirely in Montreal between May and July, starring Martin Matte in a role inspired by his father, and showcasing local talent both in front of and behind the camera, with the full cast set to be announced at a later date. The production team includes over 150 actors and members of the Quebec film industry. Vitrerie Joyal is written by Martin Matte in collaboration with his collaborator François Avard, and co-produced by Encore and Matte TV for Amazon MGM Studios.
“Vitrerie Joyal is a funny, poignant and locally-relevant story that represents Prime Video’s ongoing commitment to our Quebec audience,” said Brent Haynes, Head of Originals, Canada, Amazon MGM Studios. “Martin Matte is a uniquely talented and brilliant creator whose vision and personal connection to this story will deliver a series that’s both joyful entertainment and authenticity to our viewers.”
The series continues the investment in Quebec storytelling by Prime Video, including previous series and specials LOL: Qui rira le dernier?, Nuit Blanche, Pendant ce temps en cuisine, Pour un soir seulement, L’ultime gala and Elisabeth Rioux: sans filtre.
Since 2015, Amazon MGM Studios has commissioned over 60 Amazon Original series and films in Canada, including The Man in the High Castle and Upload in British Columbia; The Boys, Reacher, and The Expanse in Ontario; Tales from the Loop in Manitoba; as well as parts of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Sticky, Three Pines, and The Voyeurs in Quebec.
