Created by Davida Aronovitch, executive produced by Breann Smordin, and written by Aronovitch, Leah Rumack and Meg MacKay, Pioneer Girl is a contemporary comedic series premiering on Shaftesbury’s KindaTV (YouTube) on Wednesday, May 13.
Pioneer Girl follows Eleanor (Kat Barrell), a feminist history PhD who gets kicked out of academia for setting her professor’s car on fire after he steals her ideas for his book. She’s forced to take a job in a kitschy ‘pioneer village’ where it’s always 1867 and women don’t have the right to vote – or much else.
The six-episode series, funded in part by the Bell Fund’s Short-Form Digital Series Production Program, is directed by Sam Coyle and stars Kat Barrell (Wynonna Earp, Workin’ Moms), Paloma Nuñez (Peter Pan and Wendy, Baroness Von Sketch Show), Ishan Davé (Rabbit Hole, Kim’s Convenience) and Joelle Peters.
Filmed in Toronto, Canada at The Village at Black Creek, Pioneer Girl is produced by Toronto-based production company stillmovingpictures inc. The six-episode short-form series (~7 minutes per episode) will drop in full on May 13.
“We’re very excited to share Pioneer Girl with audiences. The show has such a fun and humorous premise while also covering modern conversations around gender, power, and identity,” said Davida Aronovitch, writer and creator, Pioneer Girl. “We have a truly incredible and talented cast and production team who helped bring this social-commentary comedy to the screen. It’s been a joy to make this series, and now it’s time to share it with the world.”
