Fans of Emma Donoghue‘s novel Room have much to look forward to in this Film adaptation by Irish Filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson, premiering at TIFF ’15 last month.Proving to be the sleeper hit of the festival, going on to win the People’s Choice Award, now is your chance to enjoy the Film that is winning hearts throughout the festival circuit, while at the forefront in the Awards Season race.
Centering on Ma (Brie Larson) and her five-year-old son Jack (Jacob Tremblay), we quickly realize something is unusual within the confines of their cramped living space, lit by only a skylight. Little by little, pieces of the puzzle are unveiled and we realize they are being held captive in a small gardening shed, accessibly only by Old Nick (Sean Bridgers). Determined for her and her son to escape, Ma is eager to plot a way out, but is being free in the real world necessarily the end of their worries?
Many will be surprised by how heartfelt a story Room is and it is unafraid to go to dark places in exploring more the aftermath of a young woman abducted from an otherwise normal life and even more, the difficulty of re-integrating back to society again. We take for granted some things which are second nature to us and Jack‘s immersion into the real world as a child is even more fascinating a journey.
Larson and Tremblay both are a real revelation in ROOM – deserving completely of all the buzz – and many will come away genuinely affected by their outstanding performances, not to mention a wonderful Joan Allen as Ma‘s Mother. The mother-son chemistry between Larson and Tremblay is both complex and heartbreakingly-beautiful.
Elevation Pictures release ROOM, out now in Toronto and everywhere Friday, November 6, 2015.
It’s been a good while since we’ve been out to enjoy some harness races, so what better night to do it than this Saturday night, the Breeders Crown? The championship night of standardbred racing – a little different from thoroughbred races, in that horses pull the rider on a two-wheel cart – is comprised of 12 races totaling almost $6 million – spaced quickly – often determining supremacy in each respective division. Although held annually, Woodbine Racetrack here in Toronto is lucky enough to host its 2015 edition, as hosting honours rotate track to track every year.
You’ll definitely want to come out Saturday night as there’s plenty of incentives to do so. 100 people will win betting cards with $100 loaded on them, so your chances of getting lucky are good! Your first best is on Woodbine and you also will get a free commemorative toque!
There are several stories to look-out for Saturday:
MISSION BRIEF competes in the Three-Year-Old Filly Trot. In August she had the distinction of coming second in the prestigious $1-million Hambletonian. She is expected to be a definitive favourite as she goes back against the girls.
FREAKY FEET PETE is coming to the Three-Year-Old Colt Pace race after an emotional win earlier this month in the $220,000 Indiana Super Final, defeating the winner of the historic Little Brown Jug and odds-on favourite that night, WIGGLE IT JIGGLE IT.
PURE COUNTRY comes undefeated into the Two-Year-Old Filly Pace and is expected to dominate again.
FOILED AGAIN is a hero of the sport with over $7 million in earnings, making him the richest standardbred horse of all time. At age 11, he’s still going strong and will be racing in the Open Pace, where ALWAYS B MIKI is the heavy favourite.
PINKMAN competes in the Three-Year-Old Colt Trot and after being victorious in the Hambletonian this Summer, he looks to seal his division authority Saturday night. He won Canada’s richest event for trotters, the $700k Canadian Trotting Classic in September at Mohawk Raceway.
BEE A MAGICIAN in September became the first mare in nine years to defeat the boys in the $680k Maple Leaf Trot. The great Canadian mare who was voted Horse of the Year last year, has earned almost $4 million lifetime and has won Breeders Crown events twice in her career. She competes against males again in the Open Trot.
Post time is 6:30 PM and believe me, time flies v. quickly in Harness Racing!
TSN 2 will be broadasting the Breeders’ Crown live between 9-10 PM EST.
If you’re coming out, rest assured, parking and admission are completely free.

“I don’t know why I cry, but I think it’s I ’cause I remembered for the first time that since I hated you, that I used to love you”.
These are lyrics I think we all can relate to. That sobering moment where you realize at one point you were happily in love with someone you’re no longer with.
Although there’s been a couple false starts (remember Baby Don’t Lie???), Gwen Stefani releases this new track in a clip directed by longtime collaborator Sophie Muller. Stefani reflects on lost love rather candidly and honestly here and we like it. But then again, we loved the last few comeback tracks… The Track was unveiled last weekend at an intimate show in NYC.

It was impossible to avoid the success of her worldwide hit FIGHT SONG this Summer and now Massachusetts-born Rachel Platten is ready to prove her mettle, throwing out another hit.
Major label recognition came a bit late for the gorgeous singer/songwriter who got her big breakthrough at age 34, but when it happened, we all took notice very quickly. Taylor Swift would soon be professing her love, donning a “THIS IS MY FIGHT SONG” shirt and having Platten join her onstage. Love it or not, when Fight Song comes on the radio, one cannot deny they at least know how to hum its infectious chorus.
Platten is touring and promoting right now and although we looked forward to her making a visit to Toronto sooner – a visit earlier this month got postponed – we got our moment finally!
I came ready armed with my own “THIS IS MY FIGHT SONG“, which she noticed right away, but only after being smitten with Billy. She gave me a huge hug and was genuine in her appreciation of the support. After a quick performance and interview on CITY’s Breakfast Television (see it here), she came out looking amazing in a crop top and a feathery black jacket. Fans all got photos and Platten was just lovely. We expected her to be so nice from what we see online and she was everything we imagined.
Earlier this morning, she revealed she will be coming to Toronto soon on-tour! While we still are waiting on her early 2016 debut through Columbia Records, which we 100% are buying, we have latest single Stand By You to enjoy.

The Beatles legend Ringo Starr is in Toronto today to play Massey Hall but not first without a rare opportunity to connect with fans. His book is called Photograph, a collection of Starr‘s photographic work taken from his archives and replicated from family albums. In addition to having these photos on exhibit today at Indigo Bay Bloor, Starr engaged in a Q&A with franchise founder and cheif executive, Heather Reisman.
Despite being 15 minutes only, Starr reflected upon his career and where he is today. He reveals that he grew up impoverished in Liverpool and after a bout of tuberculosis, he became obsessed with drumming after a nurse gave him a tambourine to play with. Despite not being able to afford drums, he made it a mission to go through music shops locally, playing every chance he got. After much persistence and not saying “no” to any opportunity, he would go on to become the star he is today.
Starr‘s book aims to do some good. Proceeds from sales go to the Lotus Children Foundation.
On artists of today, he wouldn’t single-out or nominate any he is most crazy about despite Reisman‘s persistence. He did say he had a great time collaborating with Green Day. He does still listen to his old vinyl and loves blues and country, occasionally downloading off iTunes new things he hears.
“Vinyl is better for the soul and ears”, he says on his preference how to listen to music. “It’s definitely gotten more popular again as kids have nothing to rebel against.”

We actually have been a little mesmerized by multi-champion Figure Skater Johnny Weir for quite some time, so we are thrilled we got to meet the fashion-forward star of the ice.
Weir currently is in on tour with Nancy Kerrigan‘s Halloween on Ice and the show stops off in Mississauga tonight at Hershey Centre.
He got tons of exposure as a fashion commentator for NBC‘s Kentucky Derby broadcast, while appearing also on popular Fashion Police as a guest panelist, where his transparency and sense of humour won him fans outside the ice rink.
Weir was amazingly nice to stop for a Selfie, all in black. His Louis Vuitton bag was everything – complete with a puff of fur. “It’s to keep my bag from getting cold”, he joked.

Few screenwriters are recognized as well as Aaron Sorkin, hence when we heard he was in town, naturally we became v. excited. If you loved The West Wing (which he created), The Newsroom, The Social Network or A Few Good Men, you already are a fan of Sorkin and you might not even have known it.
Sorkin made the rounds in Toronto today in support of Danny Boyle‘s Oscar contender, Steve Jobs, which stars Michael Fassbender in the titular role. He appeared on CITY‘s Breakfast Television (watch here) and later Global‘s The Morning Show.
We’re not sure why, but we expected him to be unapproachable, but he was amazingly nice to stop and greet fans. “Who’s that handsome guy??”, he joked as he signed an 8×10 of himself. And no word of a life he did look great!

Although Awards season is well on its way, one Film consistently winning the hearts of festival goers and critics is ROOM. We have long been singing Brie Larson‘s praises and together with young Canadian talent Jacob Tremblay, you will be blown away!
Director Lenny Abrahamson is in Toronto today promoting the emotional Thriller, filmed right here in our city. He was up and at ’em early at CITY‘s Breakfast Television at 6 am and despite not having luck with him at TIFF in September, we had a quick chance to say “hi” leaving The Morning Show at Global. See the interview here.
He had a chuckle when I told him the film made me cry, shake and now potentially relapse again. Yes, it is that good!

You will not regret seeing this Film.
