#FIRSTLOOK: HOLLYWOOD SUITE SERIES “A YEAR IN FILM” BEGINS SIXTH SEASON OF PRODUCTION

Hollywood Suite is proud to announce that the sixth season of their original documentary series A Year in Film has begun production. Premiering next spring, the next collection will look at some of the big screen highlights of 1968, 1972, 1981, 1996 and 2008.

Alongside in-house experts Alicia Fletcher, Cameron Maitland and Emily Gagne, some of Canada’s most influential industry professionals including film critic Radheyan Simonpillai (CTV’s Your Morning and CBC Radio) journalist and Designing the Movies host Nathalie Atkinson, and TIFF’s Director of Programming Robyn Citizen will be on hand to discuss the significance of the selected films and their impact on film history. This is also the first time that the 1960s will feature in the series.

“We have another binge-able season ahead with films that will hit all the nostalgia buttons,” said Ryan Mains, Head of Production for Hollywood Suite. “There is something for everyone, from critically revered award-winning titles to raunchy boundary-pushing ones. You won’t want to miss a single episode.”

This season’s episodes include:

 A Year in Film: 1968
1968 reflected the 60s tradition of upheaval, both in the real world and in Hollywood. The removal of the moralistic Production Code in favour of the new MPAA rating system allowed New Hollywood directors like Bob Rafelson and Peter Bogdanovich to make transgressive debuts. The news in 1968 was dominated by shocking moments from the Vietnam War to the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination, so escapism ruled at cinemas with sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and musicals like Funny Girl dominating the box office. When it came to re-inventing movie fantasies though, it took directors from outside America like Roger Vadim and Sergio Leone to find refreshing takes on Hollywood’s classic genres.

 A Year in Film: 1972
In 1972, five White House operatives were arrested for burglarizing the Democratic National Committee offices, kicking off the Watergate Scandal. Violence erupted in Europe at the Munich Olympics, and with the increasingly explosive conflict in Ireland. Meanwhile, in America, the Equal Rights Amendment passed the Senate thanks to decades of feminist work. Francis Ford Coppola’s epic The Godfather and Bob Fosse’s adaptation of Cabaret proved to be hits with both awards bodies and audiences. Deliverance and The Poseidon Adventure made audiences reconsider their next boat trip, while comedies like What’s Up, Doc? and The Heartbreak Kid had people wondering if even the institution of marriage was safe.

 A Year in Film: 1981
1981 began with the swearing-in of President Ronald Reagan, however, just a few months later his attempted assassination delayed the Oscars, shining a light on Jodie Foster, who the assailant hoped to impress. The first DeLorean hit the streets, hoping to be the car of the future, and MTV launched music videos. Raiders of The Lost Ark proved Spielberg and Lucas were the new kings of blockbuster filmmaking, while Blow Out and Mommie Dearest revealed some of the most interesting stories happening offscreen. And the Canadian tax shelter era paid off big with crossover hits like My Bloody Valentine, Scanners and Porky’s.

 A Year in Film: 1996
Jamaican-Canadian Donovan Bailey became the fastest man alive, Jim Carrey was the first actor to make $20 million for The Cable Guy, and Oprah changed the face of publishing with her Book Club. Hollywood experienced an unprecedented boom in blockbuster filmmaking with massive hits like Independence Day, but rising budgets (and those record-breaking celebrity pay cheques) meant an overcrowded market with just as many flops. Teen horror made an unexpected return with hits like The Craft and Scream, but it was small films like Fargo, Bottle Rocket and Bound that introduced the next generation of directors.

 A Year in Film: 2008
In 2008, Beyonce and Jay-Z tied the knot and the Large Hadron Collider was officially activated to teach us more about the universe. Neither event was big enough, though, to distract from the continuing Hollywood writers’ strike and financial crises that caused chaos in the film industry and beyond. Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight made critics reconsider superhero films, but it was Iron Man that launched a Cinematic Universe that would continue for years to come. Milk and Slumdog Millionaire proved 90s outsider directors were Oscar worthy, while comedy hits like Step Brothers showcased their stars. Unlikely romance also made a big impact with high-profile hits like Wall-E and Twilight.

#FIRSTLOOK: STEPHEN FRY HOSTS “JEOPARDY! UK”

This winter, the instantly recognizable and nostalgic game show Jeopardy! has crossed the pond with the all-new British reboot, Jeopardy! UK (20×60’). Hosted by national British treasure, Stephen Fry (The Morning Show, Veep, The Hobbit), the family-friendly quiz show will see contestants play to win, using their best general knowledge to end up on top, amassing winnings as they go. In each episode, airing weekly, three contestants compete to be crowned Jeopardy Champion, but it takes quick thinking and even quicker reactions to claim the title. It’s a fast-paced battle of wits and skill with dramatic twists and turns, as no one knows where the potentially game-changing Daily Doubles are hiding each day. The reboot will allow participants to play an extra round compared to the original format, increasing the stakes for the players. Jeopardy! UK premieres Wednesday, January 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT exclusively on BBC First in Canada.

Canadian legend Alex Trebek hosted the syndicated version Jeopardy! from 1984 to 2020; the first version of the show was hosted by Art Fleming on NBC from 1964 to 75 and 1978 to 1979. It is currently hosted by Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory) in the U.S. Stephen Fry is no stranger to hosting quiz shows, having hosted the popular British quiz program QI from 2003 to 2016. QI is also available on BBC First for Canadian audiences to enjoy.

Jeopardy! UK is a Whisper North production for ITV1 and ITVX. Executive Producers are Kerri Reid, Tom McLennan and Stephen Fry. #FIRSTLOOK: NEW PARAMOUNT+ DOCU-SERIES “THE CHANGEMAKERS”

Paramount+ today announced that all eight episodes of the new docuseries THE CHANGEMAKERS will premiere exclusively on the service globally on Monday, January 1, 2024.

Produced by Paramount International Television Studios in partnership with Proper Content Ltd, THE CHANGEMAKERS follows an A-team of impassioned campaigners as they discover the work of several remarkable activists and their respective communities around the world.

THE CHANGEMAKERS explores several topical issues including mental health, LGBTQ+ and transgender rights in the USA, the UK’s cost of living crisis, the link between systemic racism and maternal mortality, immigration and the environment – particularly access to clean water and overfishing. With episodes spanning the U.K., U.S., Ghana, Denmark, and Lithuania, each episode sees a ‘Changemaker’ partner with a community figure for two weeks to inspire, expand, and understand their situation. The Changemakers’ visit culminates in a public campaign to galvanize supporters and paint a lasting legacy for those fighting for positive change.

The ‘Changemakers’ are:

·       Seán Binder – after spending 106 days in a Greek jail for rescuing refugees from drowning off the coast, Sean spent the time awaiting his trial’s verdict fighting for underrepresented communities, migrants and asylum seekers through their legal rights. He brings to The Changemakers his vast experience of international judicial systems, plus degrees in human rights law and international relations.

·       Trinice McNally – known across the USA for her transformative efforts around equitable and inclusive college campuses that foster the growth of historically marginalized students, powerful Changemaker Trinice is a Black, queer feminist, migrant, and survivor who is committed to the liberation of oppressed people with a wealth of high-profile grassroots work to her name.

·       Dr. Waheed Arian – Afghanistan-born Dr. Waheed’s path to medicine started in refugee camps. Smuggled to the UK at 15 years old, he continued his studies with hopes of making a difference and was eventually accepted to Cambridge University. With an in-built passion for reducing inequities in physical and mental healthcare, Dr. Waheed is now a leading NHS Emergency Room doctor and founder of a worldwide telemedicine charity.

·       Flavia Broffoni – Activist, Political scientist, and Extinction Rebellion Argentina co-founder Flavia has over 20 years of experience advocating environmental policy change. She is a proud spokesperson against mining corporations and big investors for marginalized, rural communities in Latin America. Her work as a Changemaker seeks to engage city-dwellers in the fight against the climate crisis and advocate for those who have been on the frontlines since the beginning. 

The series has been produced for Paramount+ as part of Content for Change, the company’s global initiative that aims to counteract racism, bias, stereotypes, and hate on and off-screen through three pillars, one of which is focused on systemically transforming the creative supply chain.

#FIRSTLOOK: “KUNG FU PANDA 4” ANNOUNCEMENT & TRAILER

This spring, for the first time in almost a decade, comedy icon Jack Black returns to his role as Po, the world’s most unlikely kung fu master, with a hilarious, butt-kicking new chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved action-comedy franchise: Kung Fu Panda 4. Today we get a brand new Trailer!

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

Even worse, there’s been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

So, Po’s going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen (Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a corsac fox who really gets under Po’s fur but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon’s reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

The film features the voice talent of returning stars Academy Award® winner Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master, Shifu; James Hong (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Po’s adoptive father, Mr. Ping; Academy Award® nominee Bryan Cranston as Po’s birth father, Li, and Emmy Award nominee Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Shifu’s former student and arch-nemesis. Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) joins the ensemble as a new character, Han, the leader of the Den of Thieves.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is directed by Mike Mitchell (DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls, Shrek Forever After) and produced by Rebecca Huntley (DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys). The film’s co-director is Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power). In 2008, the Academy Award®-nominated 2008 inaugural chapter, Kung Fu Panda, became DreamWorks Animation’s highest-grossing original animated film and launched a franchise that has earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box-office.

Netflix is a Joke Fest, the biggest comedy festival in North America, is back and bigger than ever. Produced by Netflix in association with Live Nation, the star-studded celebration of comedy from May 2 – May 12, 2024 will feature over 300 live stand-up shows, special events, table reads, sketch and more with the best comedians and artists in the world. For 11 days, the comedy community will take over more than 35 of LA’s most beloved landmarks such as Hollywood Bowl, The Greek, The Dolby, The Forum, The Palladium, Orpheum Theatre and The Wiltern as well as historic comedy venues including The Hollywood Improv, Largo, Laugh Factory and The Comedy Store.

In 2022, Netflix is a Joke Fest featured 295 shows, with more than 330 comedians and 260,000 tickets sold. More than 60% of US members watched at least one stand-up title in 2022 and every 1 in 20 US members watched at least 20 stand-up titles in 2022. Netflix has featured more than 200 comedians in more than 350 specials over the past decade.

It’s already been a notable year for Netflix stand-up. The company’s first live streaming event was Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, which was the most-streamed comedy special in a measurement week according to Nielsen. The special also reached the Netflix Top 10 in seven countries. Mark Normand, Shane Gillis, Mike Birbiglia, Leanne Morgan and Matt Rife have also reached the Top 10 with recent specials. Also upcoming are new specials from Trevor Noah, Ricky Gervais and Dave Chappelle.

The 2024 winter anime season begins this January and Crunchyroll will be bringing more than 40 new, returning, and continuing series to audiences around the world. Streaming new episodes every week straight from Japan, check out some of the hottest series to look out for below:

After being given a second chance at life, Sung Jinwoo seeks to discover the secrets behind his new powers. From A-1 Pictures, adapted from one of the most-read Korean manhwa of all time, the thrilling action fantasy series Solo Leveling premieres on January 6.

When a group of androids revolt against the government, two partners are tasked with tracking them down. An original sci-fi series created by studio BONES for their 25th anniversary, featuring Carole & Tuesday director Motonobu Hori and Cowboy Bebop character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, Metallic Rouge premieres on January 10.

The elven mage Frieren leads heroes to defeat the Demon King. Years later, she seeks to fulfill their dying wishes. The epic sprawling fantasy Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End continues with exciting new episodes every Friday.

The eagerly-awaited Amy Winehouse Biopic from Sam Taylor-Johnson now has a set release date. Focus Features will release BACK TO BLACK on May 10, 2024. Universal Pictures International will handle distribution in the rest of the world.

BACK TO BLACK is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson from a script written by Matt Greenhalgh, following their successful collaboration on NOWHERE BOY in 2009.

The film stars break-out actress Marisa Abela (Industry) in the coveted lead role alongside Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Eddie Marsan (Fair Play) and Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris).
