For cult film fanatics that go giddy for the best of the bizarre, the wait is over. Today, the Toronto International Film Festival announces its Midnight Madness lineup for 2024, which will open with the North American Premiere of Coralie Fargeat’s buzzy horror thriller The Substance, starring Demi Moore. The Midnight Madness programme is presented by Intrepid Travel and features five World Premieres amongst the 10 titles that celebrate the best in action, horror, shock, and fantasy cinema with midnight premieres at the historic (and allegedly haunted) Royal Alexandra Theatre.
One of the most beloved programmes of the Festival, this year’s Midnight Madness highlights the wild and the eerie, from body horror to time travel, supernatural comedy to martial arts action, eccentric thrillers to provocative satire, and found footage to horror-themed punk rock. Surrounded by like-minded fans late at night, Midnight Madness filmgoers face the unknown in the company of strangers. A number of TIFF and Midnight Madness alumni are returning this year, including Joseph Kahn (TIFF 2017 People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award winner), Timo Tjahjanto (who last attended in 2016), and Fargeat (whose debut feature premiered at TIFF in 2017).
New this year, we have asked a few TIFF Programmers to share their insights into this year’s films. Watch Midnight Madness Lead Programmer Peter Kuplowsky’s terrifying summary here:

Lee, the directorial feature from award-winning Cinematographer Ellen Kuras, portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller (Kate Winslett). Miller’s singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century’s most indelible images of war, including an iconic photo of Miller herself, posing defiantly in Hitler’s private bathtub. Elevation Pictures release LEE September 27, 2024.
Miller had a profound understanding and empathy for women and the voiceless victims of war. Her images display both the fragility and ferocity of the human experience. Above all, the film shows how Miller lived her life at full-throttle in pursuit of truth, for which she paid a huge personal price, forcing her to confront a traumatic and deeply buried secret from her childhood.

CBC today announced a second season of the unscripted paranormal comedy series GHOSTING WITH LUKE HUTCHIE AND MATTHEW FINLAN (8×30) from Blue Ant Studios in association with Luke Hutchie Productions. Currently in production, the new season sees Hutchie (EZRA) and Finlan (Orphan: First Kill, EZRA) take the show on the road, expanding their quest cross-country to explore some of Canada’s most haunted places.
Joined by celebrity guests, the amateur ghost-wrangling duo will traverse the country, investigating stories of paranormal activity in Ontario, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the Yukon Territory. Their mission remains unchanged: to uncover the truth behind local ghostlore and deliver a verdict of “haunted” or “not haunted”. The new season is slated to premiere winter 2025 on the free CBC Gem streaming service.
Hutchie is most credited with creating and starring in the hit award-winning short-form series EZRA, where he portrayed the titular role of Ezra Grey, acting alongside Priyanka (Canada’s Drag Race), Zoe De Grand Maison (Orphan Black, Riverdale), Veronika Slowikowska (What We Do in the Shadows) and Finlan. Finlan previously starred in Orphan: First Kill and alongside Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk in their slasher comedy Hell of a Summer.
“Season one of Ghosting was a captivating and innovative take on the paranormal genre that left viewers craving more,” says Matthew Hornburg, Co-President, Blue Ant Studios. “In season two, viewers can expect to see a wider variety of locations across Canada with increased tension and scarier moments, but the series will still maintain the humour and liveliness that Luke, Matthew and their celebrity friends bring to the show.”
“I am so excited to be working with CBC again on such an incredible show that not only highlights Canada in a new and unique way, but also celebrates Canadian talent,” says Luke Hutchie, President, Luke Hutchie Productions. “I am so proud of the talent and locations we were able to showcase in season one and cannot wait to up the ante with a cross-country season two.”
“Luke and Matthew bring a new twist to paranormal entertainment with their spirited and spooky investigations,” says Jennifer Dettman, Executive Director, Unscripted Content, CBC. “We look forward to seeing them explore ghostly mysteries in more Canadian communities as we expand the show, and travel it across the country in season two.”
A CBC original series, GHOSTING WITH LUKE HUTCHIE AND MATTHEW FINLAN is a Blue Ant Studios production, in association with Luke Hutchie Productions. Luke Hutchie and Matthew Finlan are the Creators, Executive Producers and stars of the series. Executive Producers for Blue Ant Studios are Matthew Hornburg, Mark J.W. Bishop, Donna Luke and Jennifer Harkness. Mitch Burman (Freak Encounters, Brother vs Brother) joins as showrunner and series producer. Jonathan Jude will serve as Senior Story Producer for the season, Nikki Chow is the Series Director and Brooke Yerxa is the Associate Producer. After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots); a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) and four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
