TIFF is marking a major milestone in 2025 as it celebrates the 50th edition of its Festival with a once-in-a-lifetime marquee series titled The TIFF Story in 50 Films. Curated by TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, with input and insight from TIFF programmers past and present, this series will showcase 50 landmark films from around the world that played a significant role in connecting with audiences, and reflect the story of TIFF.
âThe TIFF Story in 50 Films is more than a retrospective â itâs a celebration of the landmark moments that have defined our Festivalâs legacy,â said Cameron Bailey, CEO, TIFF. âCurating this series has been a labour of love, poring over decades of Festival programme books to select 50 films that reflect five decades of TIFFâs taste, eye for new talent, and passion for bringing groundbreaking cinema to our audience. While so many more films have been integral to TIFFâs story and illustrate our current narrative, Iâm excited to share the full list in the months ahead and to revisit the memories and enduring impact these films have had on all of us.â
These film titles will include groundbreaking World Premieres and bold discoveries of new filmmaking talent, and speak to the breadth of artistry that has created such memorable Festival moments over the years. While only a sample of the many thousands of films presented since 1976, this selection captures the Festivalâs enduring impact. The TIFF Story in 50 Films is free for TIFF Members, one way of thanking supporters for 50 years of discovering great movies together. The series will run from June to August and will feature special events and guests, with the full list of film titles, dates, and invitees to be shared at a later date.
See the North, TIFFâs monthly, free series of Canadian cinema presented by MUBI, will celebrate the 50th milestone in 2025 by honouring the work of Canadian women and nonbinary filmmakers programmed in the years since the first Festival five decades ago. Coming up on February 11 is Darlene Naponseâs Falls Around Her, which had its World Premiere at the 2018 Festival. Monthly films will be listed in the seasonal programming highlights and online at tiff.net.
Over the past five decades, TIFF has evolved from the âFestival of Festivalsâ (the organization officially changed its name to the Toronto International Film Festival in 1994) to the largest public film festival in the world, which in 2024 welcomed approximately 700,000 guests, more than 700 talent, and 280 films as part of its Official Selection.
As announced last week, Rogers, the official Presenting Partner of the Festival, will develop and produce a TIFF 50th edition television special exploring the history, and featuring archival footage, to be aired exclusively on Citytv.
The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Rogers, will run September 4â14, 2025. For more information, visit tiff.net.

Just For Laughs has signed on as co-producer of the Broadway musical Real Women Have Curves, set to begin previews at Broadwayâs James Earl Jones Theatre on April 1, 2025. Sylvain Parent-BĂ©dard, new owner of Just For Laughs and CEO of Just For Entertainment Group â who produce the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, the world’s largest comedy festival â and JĂ©rĂŽme Tremblay, producer for the group, are joining the producing team.
This collaboration with National Artists Management Company (NAMCO) and TruWorthy Productions marks a significant milestone for the Quebec-based company in the field of theatrical and musical productions. In addition to the amazing comedy festivals that Just For Laughs has been producing around the world, the company has also created French-language adaptations of beloved musicals such as Mary Poppins, Annie, Waitress, Chicago, and many more. It was after collaborating with Barry and Fran Weissler, along with NAMCOâs executive producer Alecia Parker, on the French adaptations of Waitress and Chicago in Montreal, that the company was approached for the co-production of Real Women Have Curves on Broadway.
“Collaborating once again with our Quebec partners at Just For Laughs, this time in New York, is truly exciting. We have built a wonderful relationship and itâs a pleasure to have them as co-producers on Real Women Have Curves. They are incredible and valuable partners.” says Barry Weissler, producer of Real Women Have Curves and founder of NAMCO, the New York-based company with an impressive track record of nearly 50 years of experience in producing world-class productions. Whether on Broadway, the West End, or with international tours, NAMCOâs productions have earned 93 Tony Award nominations and 8 Laurence Olivier Award nominations, winning 24 Tony Awards and 2 Olivier Awards.
“This new and exciting adventure confirms the position of Just For Entertainment as a leader in musical theater production in Quebec and marks a significant expansion for its Just For Laughs division, opening the door to new opportunities in New York, the United States, London, and internationally.” said Sylvain Parent-BĂ©dard, president and new owner of Just For Laughs, a division of the Just For Entertainment Group. “Although comedy has always been our focus, we are convinced that theaterâwhether musical, comedic, or dramaticâ can be an equally powerful unifying force. We are excited about expanding the Just For Laughs brand with musical productions on Broadway, and it is an honor to begin this new chapter for the company with trusted partners like Barry and Alecia.”
“Our involvement as co-producer of Real Women Have Curves is a natural extension of our successful collaboration with NAMCO for the world premiere of Waitress in French last year and now for the production of Chicago. I must also say that we were immediately captivated by this original musical. The songs by Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez are absolutely beautiful, and the show powerfully demonstrates that a heartfelt story about the real challenges faced by immigrants can also be a funny, inspiring, and uplifting celebration of family, community, and resilience. Itâs truly a show that brings people together!” concludes JĂ©rĂŽme Tremblay, producer at Just For Entertainment.
Based on Josefina LĂłpez’s acclaimed play that inspired the iconic HBO hit film by Josefina LĂłpez and George LaVoo, Real Women Have Curves is a captivating new show that explores life’s unexpected turns with strength and emotion. This adaptation marks a historic first on Broadway: a musical where the entire creative team (book, music, choreography, and direction) is made up of Latin artists, including music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta and composer/lyricist Benjamin Velez, book by Lisa Loomer with Nell Benjamin, and direction and choreography by Tony and Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo. Music Supervision is by Nadia DiGiallonardo. The show will star Tatianna CĂłrdoba in her Broadway debut, alongside Screen Actors Guild Award-winner Justina Machado, and has been cast by X Casting/Victor Vazquez, CSA and ARC/Duncan Stewart, CSA.

HAPPY FACE is inspired by the true-life story of Melissa G. Moore; the critically acclaimed Happy Face podcast from iHeartPodcasts and Moore; and the autobiography Shattered Silence, written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughterâs life. In a race against the clock, Melissa must find out if an innocent man is going to be put to death for a crime her father committed. Throughout, she discovers the impact her father had on his victimsâ families and must face a reckoning of her own identity.
HAPPY FACE is produced by CBS Studios in association with King Size Productions, iHeartPodcasts and Semi-Formal Productions. Jennifer Cacicio (Your Honor, Shooter) serves as showrunner for the series and executive producer alongside Robert and Michelle King, Liz Glotzer, Melissa G.
