The 13th Annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival kicks-off next week in Toronto, running between Wednesday, October 10 through Sunday, October 14, 2012. With 70 Canadian and International Films being showcased this year, Movie Lovers have a chance to connect with Filmmakers who are bringing to light the issues impacting us on a global scale. Galas, Child & Youth Programs, Industry Series, Panels and Screenings (some free even!) highlight the Festival.
Here are some of the Films to look-out for:
LOST RIVERS – Caroline Bâcle (CAN) World Premiere, Opening Night Gala Presentation
Planet in Focus’ 2010 Green Pitch Winner Lost Rivers delves into the often overlooked rich-history of rivers within Canada and around the World. Once flowing through nearly every developed city in the world, rivers provided the infrastructure upon which modern metropolises were built. In this adventurous and revelatory look into the disappearance and recent resurfacing of these historic waterways, Lost Rivers leads us down the drain into vast underground museums of urban development.
CHASING ICE – Jeff Orlowski (USA) Canadian Premiere, Closing Night Gala Presentation
James Balog, National Geographic Photographer and Founder of the Extreme Ice Survey—an innovative, long-term photography project that merges art and science—sets out with his posse of young explorers to the Arctic with the aim of giving a “visual voice” to the planet’s changing ecosystems. Setting up their high-tech time-lapse cameras in sub-zero temperatures, the adventurers come face to face with their own mortality and the all-too-real signs of climate change. Balog and his team capture the magnificent glaciers in motion through film and photography in a way that has never been seen before and, with the alarming rate of glacial recession, is likely to never be seen again. With breathtaking images of a land that is rapidly shifting, Chasing Ice is a must-see film that takes us to the precipice of a disappearing world and proposes a challenge for change.
NORTHWORDS – Geoff Morrison (Canada) Toronto Premiere
Northwords is a new transmedia documentary project that is hosted by Shelagh Rogers, the Voice of CBC Radio’s popular book show The Next Chapter. The project follows a group of Canada’s finest writers as they travel to awe-inspiring Torngat Mountains National Park in northern Labrador to explore, have adventures and create new works that add to the continuing story of the north.
TRASHED – Candida Brady (UK) Canadian Premiere, Special Presentation
Academy Award-winning Actor Jeremy Irons pulls up his Wellies to cross littered beaches in Lebanon, inspect prison compost heaps in Yorkshire and investigate a state-of-the-art recycling plant in San Francisco on his voyage of discovery about the garbage we create, every hour of every day, across the planet. Journeying from Iceland to Indonesia, Irons speaks to Scientists, Politicians and ordinary Citizens whose health and livelihoods have been affected by pollution.
FUTURE WEATHER – Jenny Deller (USA) Canadian Premiere
When her single mom runs off to California to pursue her dream of becoming a make-up artist for the stars, Lauduree (Perla Haney-Jardine, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Untraceable), an eighth grader passionate about the environment, clings to her rural home and a science experiment she hopes will help slow climate change. During this troubled time, Lauduree is forced to come to terms with her relationships with the other women in her life: Ms. Markovi, the Science Club Teacher she idolizes (Lili Taylor, Six Feet Under, I Shot Andy Warhol) and Greta, her caustic grandmother superbly played by Amy Madigan (Gone Baby Gone, Field of Dreams).

Producer Paul Epworth teams-up with Adele again after some massive success on her 21 Disc, and after much talk and rumour, we finally get to hear the official Theme Song for Sony Pictures’ Skyfall, the latest in the James Bond Franchise. Backed by a 77-piece Orchestra, Adele sounds stunning here in this bit of a dark Masterpiece, which sounds Classic Bond.
With the impending birth of her Child, she might be gone for a bit. This will do I suppose!
The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Skyfall hit stores November 6, 2012.

He’s back …and hotter than ever. Politician/Actor/Bodybuilder and Author Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Toronto to promote his Memoir, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Story. The Book from Simon & Schuster is gaining tons of buzz surrounding his dishing-out about two Affairs he had while married to Ex-Wife Maria Shriver. Any concerns about him being uncomfortable about the matter would appear to have been alleviated – Schwarzenegger looked in great spirits as he arrived at Indigo Manulife Centre earlier today to meet Fans at his Autograph Signing. Some even got to shake his hand!
Fans queued as early as last night for a chance to meet their Idol and despite only 250 Wristbands being offered this morning at 8:00 AM, a massive Crowd came out still to show their Support still even without chance of an Autograph.
Schwarzenegger can next be seen in his return to the Big Screen in January as The Land Stand hits theatres via Alliance Films.

Flying into Toronto last night to promote hotly-tipped new Series Chicago Fire, David Eigenberg definitely is a familiar face to a generation of Women. Known widely for his work on HBO‘s Sex and the City as Bartender/Husband of Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Steve Brady, the Actor was out and about doing Press at the Shaw Media Building. Just last night he made an appearance on newly-launched Entertainment Tonight Canada Live.
Noticing his hair looked noticeably-improved after this Snap on Twitter the other day, Eigenberg had a good chuckle at my comment, stopping for a quick Photo. Great Guy.
The Chicago Native is cast perfectly (and conveniently) in the Drama Series set in his Hometown, premiering next Wednesday at 10:00 PM on NBC and Global Television. As an aside, Taylor Kinney (Boyfriend of Lady Gaga) stars in the Series!

He’s trained the Dogs of Scarlett Johansson, Oprah Winfrey, Nicolas Cage and Will Smith and now The Dog Whisperer is ready to share his tips with Canada on how to transform our relationships with our Dogs. Cesar Millan was out and about earlier today promoting his upcoming Canadian Live Nation-organized Tour, which includes dates in Oshawa (November 23) and Toronto (November 27), in addition to Stop-offs throughout the Country later this year.
Although Daddy had the pleasure of meeting Millan prior, it was Billy‘s turn to meet the Master and although cautious about getting fur on his sweater, he was more than happy to hold the leash. The Canine Expert was wonderfully kind to stop and take Photos with Passersby and Canine Fans alike following his appearance on Global Television‘s The Morning Show earlier.

Pretty in pink, gorgeous Model/Presenter/Actress Elizabeth Hurley was spotted earlier today doing Press for a cause dear to her heart. The Austin Powers and Gossip Girl Star is currently in Toronto promoting Estée Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Program, timed right at the beginning of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Hurley appeared last night at The Bay – Queen Street for a Media Event and visits the store again today at noon to sign some Autographs and meet some Fans. Earlier in the week she lit New York City’s Empire State Building pink in celebration of her Cause.
Incredibly gracious, the British Beauty spent a bit of time posing for Photos and signing Autographs for Fans following her Breakfast Television appearance, where she chat with Kevin Frankish and Dina Pugliese.

With attentions turned to her Ginger & Rosa Co-Stars Christina Hendricks and Elle Fanning, this Actress went under the radar of many at TIFF 2012, but I had my eyes peeled! Make no mistake, she is going to be a major Star this time next year. Alice Englert is the Daughter of brilliant Director Jane Campion and Filmmaker Colin Englert, hailing from New Zealand. She will be starring as Lena in the upcoming Film Adaptation of Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl‘s Beautiful Creatures.
The Story centers around Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich) who meets the mysterious Lena, both of them uncovering v. dark secrets about their Families. Beautiful Creatures stars also Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emily Rossum and Kyle Gallner. Thrilled also to see Thomas Mann (Project X) advance to this next step of his Career – was amazing getting to chat with him last year as he was in-town!
