Review by Amanda Gilmore for Mr. Will Wong
After Sonic (Ben Schwartz) flees his planet for the safety of Earth, he becomes lonely living in a cave within the forest of rural Green Hill, Montana. With all this time to speed through the small-town, heās learned about everyone living there, particularly the compassionate Police Officer Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). One night, Sonic accidentally sets-off an electric blast that causes the town to lose power, resulting in the government believing itās a terror incident. They send in Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) who aggressively invades Green Hills in search of Sonic. This forces a frightened SonicĀ and his new best friend WachowskiĀ to drive across the country to find his golden rings.
Sonic The Hedgehog is an entertaining ride from beginning to end with a lot of heartfelt moments sprinkled throughout. Screenwriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller have written a Sonic who experiences the human condition. He has left his original home and is now lost and lonely in this new world. In doing this, the writing duo has given him intention for his actions along with causing this speedy video game character to be relatable on an emotional level. This live-action video game adaptation has lot of energetic action scenes. These scenes range from being within the Sonic universe we all know and love, to being brought to real life scenarios such as car chases. Our attention was held throughout.
Thereās a distinct comic-like flair – even if it does go a bit overboard at times – to the Film which works with this committed Cast. Schwartz is the perfectĀ Sonic. He has the ability to change his voice to express the adorable to mischievous sides of this beloved character. Then there is the comedic brilliance of Carrey. His humour is one that is wholly particular which only he can do andĀ he knocks it right out of the park, nearly outshiningĀ SonicĀ himself.
Paramount Pictures Canada release SONIC THE HEDGEHOG on Friday, February 14, 2020.
