You’re probably already a fan of Anthony Mackie and don’t even know it. The talented veteran on screen and stage has built a career of acclaim starring in a litany of high-profile productions. If you’ve seen Million Dollar Baby, We Are Marshall, Half Nelson, The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau or Pain & Gain, you’ve already likely admired his work. The Louisiana-born star however would go on to best be known for his work as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Universe.
A snow storm alert couldn’t stop the personable Mackie from making his way to Toronto to promote his latest effort, TRIPLE 9, directed by John Hillcoat. The star-studded Action-Thriller stars the likes of Norman Reedus, Aaron Paul, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor and more. It tells a story of moral-fluidity and corruption as a group of Police Officers and criminals band to perform two high-risk heists tasked by the Russian mafia. Mackie plays corrupt police officer Marcus Atwood, whose life is put on the line to complete the mission. As an indicator of Mackie‘s fun demeanour, he joked to photographers, “Hold on, I gotta adjust my ‘junk’!” before posing for cameras.
Our David Baldwin and Justin Waldman chat with Mackie tonight at the Scotiabank Theatre Red Carpet Premiere of TRIPLE 9. The weather would not stop dedicated fans who lined the fan pit at the venue in hopes of a Selfie with the star.
David: “What drew you to the script?”
Anthony: “Really, I just wanted to work with John. When I read the script I was really intrigued by the idea of this character and his different levels of complexity. I find a lot of the time when you’re not the lead character, you get one-note characters. The script was really well-written and the characters all get their own moment and most of the time you don’t get that.”
David: “Your character is the most morally-ambiguous one in Triple 9. Is he good or is he bad? In the middle of the Movie, he has second thoughts.”
Anthony: “I think that’s great. You go into Movie seeing the character in one way and by the end of it you realize a completely different person was in the Movie. When you see this type of a character, you go on a journey. You buy into who he is.”.
David: “Tell me what it was like working with this Powerhouse Cast.”.
Anthony: “It was fun. It was easy. It is great when you work with actors if they are gonna show up and do the work. They just do the work. So you gotta make sure you’re on your A-Game.”.
Justin: “When are you going to become Captain America?”.
Anthony: “Sh*t, I don’t know!” (laughs)
