#BOXOFFICE: “INSURGENT” OVERTHROWS THE BOX OFFICE WITH #1 DEBUT
Like its Predecessor, THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT opens big at the Box Office with $49.6 million from 3,875 theatres across North America for eOne Films/Lionsgate Films. Critics didn’t think much of it with a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, while Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore. By contrast its 2014 Installment opened with $54 million.
In its second consecutive week out, CINDERELLA continues to perform exceedingly well with $35.7 million earned for Disney. In two weeks, it has accumulated $123 million already domestically, already earning back its production costs.
A distant third is THE GUNMAN $5.5 million from 2,816 theatres for Open Road Films/Elevation Pictures. The Film features a strong Cast which includes Sean Penn, Idris Elba and Javier Bardem. While Critics panned the Action Flick from the Director who brought us Taken, earning only 14% on the Tomatometer, Audiences gave it a much more forgiving B- CinemaScore.
THE KINGSMAN continues to outperform itself in fourth this week with $4.8 million in its sixth week out for 20th Century Fox.
Debuting in sixth is DO YOU BELIEVE with $3.5 million for Pure Flix. The Title starring Mira Sorvino and Sean Astin has yet to get Canadian distribution.
Former Champ CHAPPIE rounds-out the Top Ten with $2.5 million for Sony Pictures in its third week. To date domestically it has earned $28 million.
