Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
As a Fan of most of Andrew Niccol’s work I can confidently say that Good Kill is a riveting Drama that truly shows the chemistry Niccol and Ethan Hawke possess. The Film focuses on Major Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke) and his difficulties of being grounded and working as a Drone Pilot who takes down Al-Qaeda through Drones. However when the CIA enlists the help of Egan and his team, Egan’s feelings towards the fight against terror becomes compromised as well as his morals. The hard choice that Egan has to make is following corrupt orders to secure his position, or break the rules and risk facing serious military consequences.
What is truly incredible about the Movie is Hawke‘s performance throughout. He takes us through a journey how it must feel like for a Military Jet Fighter to be grounded and forced to work on drones and take out the target. Even when the going gets tough and we see his Character start to fall apart, his ability to conceal it until a turn within the Movie is something that only a great Actor as he can accomplish. Good Kill does suffer from pacing issues, at times a tad on the slow, but has an extremely important moral message which needs to be told.
Good Kill screens Tuesday, September 9, 2014 9 PM at Ryerson Theatre and Wednesday, September 10, 2014 3 PM at Ryerson Theatre.
