Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
For first-time Feature Writer/Director and Rookie Blue Star Adam Macdonald, partnering with Missy Peregrym, also from that popular Series, seemed like an obvious choice in Backcountry. As far as suspense Drama/Horror Films go, the Film is a welcome addition in the saturated Genre.
Backcountry centers on Jen (Peregrym) and Alex (Jeff Roup) as they embark on an adventure through the Ontario Wilderness. Jen being clearly addicted to her phone feels uneasy about the idea, but goes along with it to make Alex happy. Besides, what is the worst that can happen? Upon their arrival at a National Park, they are prohibited from going on Blackfoot Trail, which happens to be the place Alex desperately wants to go. They decide to ignore the warning from the Park Ranger and attempt to find the Trail unfortunately for Jen and Alex this proves to have some truly dire consequences.
The chemistry between the two Leads, Peregrym (Jen) and Jeff Roup (Alex) certainly is one of the strongest aspects of the Film. However, suspense is a well-used technique leaving the Audience at the edge of their seat until the Third Act of the Movie where the Couple’s most daunting threat finally reveals itself. This Thriller not to be missed, it will have you grasping for air on the edge of your seats.
Backcountry opens Friday, August 14, 2015 via D Films.
