Review by Justin Waldman for Mr. Will Wong
Director Jake Szymanski and screenwriting team of Andre Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien adapt the truthful story of the Stangle brothers as they try to get dates for their sisters wedding as to distract them from causing chaos.
Meet Dave (Zac Efron) and his brother Mike (Adam Devine) they’re party animals, and at every family gathering they have, everything that can go wrong inevitably does. Now when their sister Jeanie (Toronto’s Sugar Lyn Beard) is getting married to her husband Eric (Sam Richardson), their parents (Stephen Root and Stephanie Faracy) make them get dates for the big day so not to rile each other up and hence, catastrophe. That is where Craigslist comes in. They post an ad looking for dates that goes viral and end up meeting Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), two nice respectable girls, or so it seems. The brothers take these girls to Hawaii for their sister’s wedding. What could go wrong?
The performances in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates make the Movie incredibly-funny. The chemistry that is shared between Zac Efron and Adam Devine feeds much of the energy here. They’re absurd and the Movie is better for it. Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick soar together. You just may find yourself in pain from laughter. While the Movie is funny and raunchy, it falls apart only when you put all four characters on-screen together. On their own respectively, the guys and the girls connect hilariously, but together, it is a bit of a misfire. Fortunately for the Comedy, much of the time is spent on their individual friendships. Grab you best buds this weekend, and check out the never-ending laugh fest that is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
