Either you want to give Machete a hug or you want to kill Machete. Fortunately for us, we’re more the former. Although some might deem it unnecessary, Director/Writer Robert Rodrgiuez has managed to squeeze-out another Story about our favourite knife-wielding Mexican Superhero in Machete Kills.
In this Sequel to the well-received 2010 Film, we see Machete (Danny Trejo) wanted both dead and alive as he is enlisted by the President of the United States (Charlie Sheen) to take down a dangerous and powerful Arms Dealer in Luther Voz (Mel Gibson), before he launches a catastrophic weapon into Space. Along the way, Machete may have a sexy distraction or two along the way in Miss San Antonio (Amber Heard) and Madame Desdemona (Sofia Vergara), at once in a fight for his life against his Attackers – human and clone – lurking at every corner and ready to hack-off his head.
Machete Kills is everything it should be: exploitative and exploding with action. It also is unapologetic, just violent enough and imaginatively entertaining. Rodriguez calls in a few favours and what we get are almost two hours’ worth of endless Starpower with hilarious and unexpected turns from the deliciously-angry Sofia Vergara, armed with a machine gun bra. Charlie Sheen is a delight essentially playing a Presidential version of himself, while Demian Bichir is fabulous as the sleazy Mendez the Madman. Amber Heard gives Fanboys tons of Eye Candy and in her own right is awesome as the scene-stealing Miss San Antonio, a Pageant Queen unlike any other. Mel Gibson is the biggest surprise of all, cast well as Machete‘s Arch Nemesis. Although perhaps a bit underwhelmigly-executed, Lady Gaga‘s Big Screen debut as La Chameleón will leave her Monsters with their paws up and wanting more. Most of all, only Trejo and Trejo alone could be Machete and he shows relentless straight-faced devotion to the role which has defined his Career.
VVS Films releases Machete Kills on Friday, October 11, 2013.
