Ultraviolence is exactly the Album we’ve been waiting for. The Sophomore effort certainly is not a slump, coming from one of Music’s most promising new presences, Lana Del Rey. We obsessed over 2012’s Born to Die and after taking time to grow artistically following her much-talked-about Saturday Night Live performance, Fans now are reaping the rewards of the said absence.
Lana Del Rey certainly has branded herself well. Timeless, elegant, mysterious. Movie Star. These values are extolled in her new Disc, a mesmerizing 11-track Collection of co-produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. The listening experience is darkly cinematic and almost instantaneously we are cast under the spell of the Songstress’ breathy, ethereal upper-range and Stevie Nicks-meets-Nancy Sinatra-like lower register. She certainly has taken somewhat of a queue from Amy Winehouse directionally and we certainly cannot complain. The sonically-cohesive experience clearly is born out of love, insecurities and Del Rey‘s longing affections. Quickly both artistically and spiritually, she has become the Artist we saw so many flashes of promise with on sparsely-produced Ditties like Video Games and Blue Jeans. Ultraviolence is intricate, rich and multi-layered – a gorgeous experience with tons to listen to.
The Album’s opening track Cruel World enchants and its Titular Track hypnotizes. Moody second Single Shades of Cool defines true romance – a stunning, moody ode to a love unbreakable. Brooklyn Baby has Lana Del Rey paying homage to the New York which shaped the Woman she has become – everything from her Jazz records to Beat Poetry. First Single West Coast possesses a sophisticated, sultry groove which warrants multiple listens. Fucked My Way to the Top eggs-on rumours certainly, Del Rey recently admitting to having had a long-term relationship with a certain Label Executive. Closing Number, a Cover in Other Woman, certainly is not short on theatrics, among the Collection’s most pronounced moments, ending the Disc in such a way that we are left wanting more and to be honest it’s been a while since we’ve been this excited about an Artist.
