Review by David Baldwin for Mr. Will Wong
Big city sex columnist Cassie Cranston (Jewel Staite) was ostracized and labeled the town slut after embarrassing herself at a house party. Years later, she returns to her small town for her mother’s funeral much to the chagrin of the town’s citizens. But her reappearance helps the residents decide to really shake things up: by asking her to help plan an orgy.
How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town might be a long title, but that only helps add to how charming and very silly this little Canadian Film is. It is not particularly deep despite the motivations these people have for wanting to participate in the titular orgy. But what it lacks in character development is made up for with a great deal of heart and emotion that is typically missing from this genre. Writer/Director Jeremy LaLonde goes to great lengths to keep the Film grounded and not overly-raunchy (although a rather graphic scene involving a pregnant resident is easily one of the Film’s highlights). It bears more than a few passing similarities to other Canadian sex-themed gems like My Awkward Sexual Adventure and Young People Fucking, but LaLonde does more than enough to keep his Film distinct.
How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town is consistently fresh and funny. It helps that the cast has such great chemistry with each other, and LaLonde’s breezy script is so much fun. The title may sound a little risky, but you will be more than delighted by how surprisingly enjoyable it is.
Northern Banner release HOW TO PLAN AN ORGY IN A SMALL TOWN Friday, May 13, 2016 in select cities and VOD.
