It is safe to say that Sci-Fi has lacked a real presence in American Cinema of late. Sure there have been a few bright moments, but for the most part it’s lost in the dark of the moon. Alas the sun has risen this Summer, and it’s illuminated an array of Space Operas and visionary Tales. The most recent of which being the highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy.
Relative-Unknowns until recently, this Gang of rag-tag Ruffians have burst onto the scene like a solar flare. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Batista) and Groot (Vin Diesel) have banded together to thwart an infinite crisis. Said crisis: a powerful gem has been discovered… and a zealous warlord wishes to possess it.
Such is the Synopsis. Five intergalactic Individuals fall into trouble, and in time must help each other up. James Gunn spins this everyday yarn into a picturesque quilt. Stunning sets, couture costumes, and mind-blowing make-up combine to create an amazing aesthetic. Not to mention the endless amount of breath taking CGI, making this Disney/Marvel’s best 3D endeavor yet!
But there’s more to brag about than just depth of field. For this Film is also equipped with a hilarious script. Gunn, whose work on previous projects like PG Porn and Lollipop Chainsaw, proved he was the best Candidate to write a tree debating loyalty with a raccoon. Speaking of the latter, Rocket is certainly the scene stealer thanks to the aforementioned Animators and his Voice Actor Bradley Cooper. Cooper fires-off One-liners with ease, but he’s not the only gut-buster around. Pratt is a strong Comedic Lead, and has been gearing up to be so for some time now. Furthermore he’s fit as fiddle, just like his beautiful Co-star Saldana. Certainly no stranger to Sci-Fi, Saldana goes green and kicks-ass throughout, just like Big Boy Batista. It’s impressive to see the Ex-Wrestler hold his own on the Big Screen, especially adorned in such incredible body makeup.
But these mere morsels are only a taste of the feast that is Guardians of the Galaxy. So all of you that have been starved of the Sci-Fi you so desperately crave, even you who’ve already sampled the spread this Summer has offered, loosen your belts and prepare to dig in for more. And if you can, see it in IMAX 3D, as it’s best to accompany a hardy comedy with the appropriate Eye Candy. Cue the Cassette and ready the Rocket Ship, Sci-Fi truly is back thanks to this Gem of a Blockbuster.
