There are few things I am absolutely certain of in life. Cher delivering a solid Album however, is one thing I can be sure of. Although I’m totally dating myself by saying so, the Pop Culture Icon was a huge part of my younger years with Songs like If I Could Turn Back Time, Just Like Jesse James and even Believe, which still today is a Staple on AC Radio, basically defining my life. Not only do I enjoy these Songs, I full-on am belt-in-the-Shower passionate about them. There is a boldly-stated timelessness to Cher‘s Music, let alone Cher herself.
This latest Collection, her unbelievable 26th Studio Disc Closer to the Truth, delivers Fans exactly what they expect and deserve after an extended 12-year Hiatus. Point blank, it is a phenomenal eleven-track Dance Floor Romp. Feeling like a continuation of her Believe and even dancier Living Proof-era, this Set brings to Icon up-to-speed with much of that same Euro-Dance-Pop Sound, but infused with fresher Production. Even Paul Oakenfold couldn’t say “no”.
First Single Woman’s World already has heated-up Discos around the Continent, reaching number one on Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs Chart. But if you ask me, there is much more fabulosity to be found on this melodically-strong, cohesive-sounding Batch of Songs. Offerings like Take it Like a Man and Dressed to Kill are about as fun, over-the-top and empowering as they sound in titular form. I Walk Alone is a modern day continuation of 1971’s Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.
A Cher Disc wouldn’t be so without its Power Ballads and she saves this for late in the Disc with moments like Favourite Scars and I Hope You Find It, which are driven by a wisdom and life experience only Cher could deliver with buyable substance and weight. The amazing P!nk lends a hand co-writing Album Closer, Lie to Me. Sirens, co-written with GRAMMY-winning British Producer Mark Taylor who contributes a bulk of the Tracks here, is a Standout, emoting effortlessly and it certainly is Single-worthy. Yes, she’s lost a slight notch in that upper range, but the power and conviction still are there. Sign me up for Pre-Sale Tickets to that Farewell (Again!) Tour.
