Review by Jonathan Godfrey for Mr. Will Wong
Over a year ago now, Disney and Marvel announced that they would be releasing a 3D Animated Superhero Project titled, Big Hero 6. As far as Superheroes go, the aforementioned Sextuplet will be something new to imitate and enjoy. That said, they didn’t appear out of nowhere. No, these Do-Gooders were lifted from the pages of a 90s Comic by the same name. But for the most part the title is all the Film took, that and the Characters’ names…
Hiro, Baymax, Honey Lemon, Wasabi, Go Go & Fred can all be found in Marvel’s Comic from yesteryear. That said, their present onscreen iterations are amazing in their own right. Hiro acts as their Leader, and the central Protagonist of the Film. He’s a thirteen-year-old Boy Genius whose fill-in Parental Figures are his older Brother Tadashi and his aunt Cass. He loses one early on in the movie, immediately after winning a scholarship to the school of his dreams. Following the loss he struggles to take advantage of his scholarship until his Brother’s Robot Baymax inspires him to solve the murder mystery that has left him inconsolable.
He soon seeks out Honey Lemon, Wasabi, Go Go & Fred to help him catch the Criminal who not only killed his loved one, but also stole the technology that earned him his scholarship. Armed with cool tech, the Crew work through their morality play with emotional fervor.
Laughter and tears are readily available throughout the Film, so are the jaw-dropping moments. Disney’s Don Hall (Writer of Tarzan, The Princess and the Frog) and Chris Williams (Writer of Mulan & Bolt) helm the Project, and lead a band of outstanding Artists to create some of the most incredible eye candy to date. Flight scenes and fight scenes look outstanding on the Big Sscreen. That said, so does every inch of the fictional City where the story takes place. San Fransokyo is a bleeding edge mash up of all the beauty that exists within the coastal cities it takes its name from.
Beautiful, brilliant, and built to inspire every Boy and Girl who sees it, Big Hero 6 is a worthy addition to the incomparable Walt Disney Animated Studios Library. And hot on the heels of another Sci-Fi Superhero Flick from Disney (Guardians of the Galaxy), it’s certain to be fitting and fantastic fun for the whole Family.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Canada release BIG HERO 6 on Friday, November 7, 2014.
