#REVIEW: “ANOTHER ROUND”
By Mr. Will Wong
After receiving wide acclaim at TIFF ’20, Thomas Vintenberg‘s (Far From the Madding Crowd) ANOTHER ROUND nears its release. The Danish-language Drama is a daring exploration of mid-life crisis with some outstanding work from lead Mads Mikkelsen as its centerpiece.
The Film centers on a teacher named Martin (Mikkelsen), whom is experiencing some trouble in his marriage, feeling disconnected from his family. He and his colleagues at the school, Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Peter (Lars Ranthe) and Nikolaj (Magnus Millang) discuss the theory of Finn Skårderud, who believes that people are at their most optimal states at ,50 Blood Alcohol Concentration. While his buddies initially dismiss the idea of experimenting, eventually they join-in and up the ante. Their experiment then leads to consequences impacting their families, threatening to destroy everything they have built.
What makes Vintenberg’s Film such an enthralling watch is that the takes his characters to the limit in this experiment and we look on vicariously having a feeling that there might be dire results. The Film goes back and forth between adventure and danger and that keeps the audience on edge the entire duration. That being said, Mikkelsen is outstanding here disappearing entirely into Martin‘s indiscretion and loss of direction in life. Certainly an engaging watch despite our being unclear where things are headed exactly on this boozy romp. The ending sequence is rather dazzling.
Mongrel Media release ANOTHER ROUND via Video-on-Demand Friday, December 18, 2020.
