Awards season officially has wrapped with the 96th Academy Awards having taken place at Dolby Theatre. Though OPPENHEIMER was pitted much against BARBIE this past Summer at the Box Office, alas it would be the one to dominate Awards Season, taking home seven Oscars, including the ultimate crown of Best Picture. Other wins for the Blockbuster include Directing (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson) and Best Editing (Jennifer Lame).
Yorgos Lanthimos’ POOR THINGS also would go on to glory, taking home four Oscars including Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Production Design (Production Design: James Price and Shona Heath; Set Decoration: Zsuzsa Mihalek), Best Makeup & Hairstyling (Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston) and Best Costume Design (Holly Waddington). Stone has the distinction of becoming the thirteenth Actress to win a second Oscar.
Jimmy Kimmel returned as host for the fourth time, drawing raves from the audience, capped-off by a clap back at former President Donald Trump who posted negative remarks about Kimmel online. Kimmel replied, “Thank you President Trump for watching. Isn’t it past your jail time?”, which was met with laughs and cheers.
While BARBIE was no match for OPPENHEIMER, it still took home gold for Best Original Song with Finneas & Billie Eilish‘s “What Was I Made For“, and a showstopping performance of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling was a dazzling spectable, to be talked about for many years to come.

Some surprises include exclusion of Charles Melton and Natalie Portman for MAY DECEMBER, and they’ve been in the running much of Awards Season. While nominated for Best Picture, PAST LIVES star Greta Lee wasn’t among the list of nominees as well. The same can be said about Director Greta Gerwig for Directing and Margot Robbie for Best Actress for her performance in record-smashing BARBIE.

About ROJEK
SynopsisâŻ
ROJEK encounters incarcerated members of the Islamic State from all over the world, as well as their wives detained in prison-camps, who are sharing a common dream: establishing a caliphate. Confronted with the fundamentalist beliefs of the jihadists, the film attempts to trace the beginning, the rise and fall of the Islamic State (ISIS) through their personal stories. These conversations are the thread along which the documentary evolves, as it is intertwined with various sequences depicting current, post-war Syrian Kurdistan.
ROJEK offers an intimate gaze at an unknown reality, testifying of pivotal moments experienced by the actors of this conflict. The film tackles how this ideological war is only the beginning of a new kind of threat.

The 94th annual Academy Awards returned once again to Dolby Theatre as Cinema’s most prestigious night had altered course during the Pandemic. Taking top honours was Sian Heder‘s CODA, taking Best Picture. The Film is the first-ever Film with a predominantly Deaf Cast to win Best Picture. It premiered at Sundance in 2021, before selling to Apple for a record $25 million, proving a smart investment. The Film written and directed Heder, is based on the 2014 French coming-of-age film La Famille BĂ©lier, centering on a young woman who is the child of deaf parents.
In addition to winning Best Picture, CODA also won Heder Best Adapted Screenplay and Troy Kotsur would take Supporting Actor.
Other major winners included Will Smith for his work in KING RICHARD, landing him Best Actor, proving third time’s the charm after having been nominated thrice for an Oscar.
Jessica Chastain gained much momentum in recent weeks, taking Best Actress for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE. This also was her third time being nominated for an Oscar, proving once again that third time’s the charm!
Best Director went to Jane Campion for THE POWER OF THE DOG, which was seen as the favourite to win Best Picture. She has the distinction of being the third woman ever to win the category.
Hosted by a Trio of Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, the night was not without drama. Funnyman Chris Rock when presenting Best Documentary, poked fun at Jada Pinkett Smith‘s baldness which landed him a slap on-stage from eventual Will Smith, in defense of his wife.

The 93rd annual Academy Awards took place tonight at Union Station in Los Angeles, as Hollywood continues to navigate the Pandemic. The ceremony was preceded by a reduced Red Carpet and attendance was limited and socially-distanced within the venue, a departure from the usual Kodak Theatre, which still was used this year, but for a segment leading to the Humanitarian Award, which was awarded to the Motion Picture and Television Fund.
Without a formal host this year, the broadcast also adopted a number of new changes including no interruption of winner’s speeches under Musical Director Questlove. Presenters and winners drew their attention to anti-racism, including Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient Tyler Perry, stating in his speech, “It is my hope that all of us will teach our kids: refuse hate. Donât hate anybody.”.
The evening’s big winner was NOMADLAND, taking Best Picture. The Film directed by ChloĂ© Zhao, made history as she became the first ever Asian woman to win in the Directing category, following Korean Director Bong Joon-Ho‘s win for Parasite last year. Just last September, the Film had won the People’s Choice Award here in Toronto at TIFF. Frances McDormand went on to win her fourth Oscar, taking Best Actress for her work in the Film.
An absent Sir Anthony Hopkins took home his second Oscar for Best Actor for his work in THE FATHER, which also took Adapted Screenplay earlier in the ceremony. He won previous for 1992’s Silence of the Lambs. Chadwick Boseman who posthumously was sweeping much of Awards Season was seen as the favourite to win, for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
History also was made as MINARI star Youn Yuh-Jung became the first ever South Korean Actress ever to be nominated and win an Oscar. The veteran accepted her Award from MINARI Producer Brad Pitt, starstruck and asking him where he was during production for the Film. Jokingly, she also forgave everyone for mispronouncing her name, questioning whether the Award was simply “American hospitality”.
