#OSCARS: “SINNERS” LEADS 2026 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS

SINNERS leads the way at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards, with a record 16 nominations, including Best Picture. They are followed closely with Best Picture favourite ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, garnering 13 nominations.

Some surprises among the group include Elle Fanning getting a Best Supporting Actress nomination for international feature SENTIMENTAL VALUE, which got nine nominations total. Noticeable omissions included Ariana Grande for WICKED: FOR GOOD, Chase Infiniti for ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, Odessa A’zion for MARTY SUPREME, and AVATAR: FIRE & ASH which has performed exceedingly well commercially, though not recognized for Best Picture.

The Awards are set to take place March 15, 2026 at 7 PM ET.

Nominees for the 86th annual GOLDEN GLOBE Awards have been announced and leading the way are ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER in the film categories with nine nominations, and THE WHITE LOTUS Season Three with six nominations.

New this year is a category for Podcast, and most notably. WICKED: FOR GOOD failed to garner a nomination for Best Comedy or Musical.

#FIRSTLOOK: “THE THINGS YOU KILL” TO REPRESENT CANADA AT THE OSCARS 2026

The Things You Kill is representing Canada in the nomination process for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards®, to be held on March 15, 2026. The film is directed, written and produced by Alireza Khatami, and co-produced by Tell Tall Tale, Fulgurance, Remora Films, Lava Films, Band With Pictures and Sineaktif. It is being distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media. International sales are handled by Best Friend Forever.

The Things You Kill, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, will be released on September 19th, 2025. The film stars Ekin Koç, Erkan Kolçak Köstendil, Hazar Ergüçlü, and Ercan Kesal. As the appointed non-voting chair of the committee, Telefilm Canada organizes the annual pan-Canadian Selection Committee for Canada’s submission to the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards®. The vote was determined by a pan-Canadian committee of industry organizations and guilds, as well as filmmakers and industry professionals appointed to represent organizations.16 films were submitted for consideration as Canada’s Choice this year.

The committee met the morning of August 26th to select the film. So far, 12 countries have submitted their entries for the Best International Feature Film category. Last year, 89 countries submitted a film.

Synopsis 

Haunted by the suspicious death of his ailing mother, Ali, a university professor coerces his enigmatic gardener to execute a cold-blooded act of vengeance. As long-buried family secrets resurface, the police tighten their noose, and doubts begin eroding his conscience. Ali has no choice but to look into the abyss of his own soul.

About Alireza Khatami

Alireza Khatami is a Canadian writer, director, and producer. Born into the Indigenous Khamse tribe in southeast Iran, he draws from the oral storytelling traditions of his heritage to craft films that blend magic realism with incisive social commentary. His work explores the invisible structures of power, memory, and identity through bold and unconventional cinematic language.

His debut feature, Oblivion Verses, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay and the FIPRESCI Prize. His second feature, Terrestrial Verses (co-directed with Ali Asgari), premiered at Cannes in Un Certain Regard and has been released in over 15 countries.

His latest film, The Things You Kill, premiered at Sundance 2025, where it received widespread acclaim from both juries and critics, winning the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award. Described as “brilliant” by Variety, “feverish” by IndieWire, and “a case study in how to make an effective psychological thriller” by Vulture, the film confirms Khatami’s place as a vital voice in Canadian and international cinema.

After a slight delay due to the Califormia wildfires, nominees were announced by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott this mroming for the 97th Academy Awards. #GOLDENGLOBES: “THE BRUTALIST”, “EMILIA PÉREZ” AND “SHOGUN” LEAD WINNERS AT 2025 GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS

Honouring the best in Television and Cinema, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards were held tonight in Los Angeles. Leading the way in the Cinema categories was THE BRUTALIST taking Best Director (Brady Corbet), Actor (Adrien Brody) and Best Motion Picture Drama, strengthening its case for Best Picture at the impending Academy Awards in March.

But if anything, the race for Best Picture is as competitive as ever with Jacques Audiard‘s EMILIA PÉREZ also taking Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, Best Motion Picture Non-English Language, Best Original Song (“El Mal”), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana).

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement would go to Jon M. Chu‘s WICKED, which also is in the running for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The Film, released late November, already has grossed over $680 million globally.

FX‘s SHŌGUN dominated the Television categories, winning Best Television Series Drama, Best Actor in a Television Series Drama (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best Actress in a TV Series (Anna Sawai), and Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series (Tadanobu Asano).

In the Television Series Comedy categories, HBO‘s HACKS would dominate, taking Best Television Series Comedy and Best Actress in a Television Series Comedy (Jean Smart).

Some of the biggest surprises of the night include wins from THE SUBSTANCE star Demi Moore upsetting the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy category, a category in which ANORA‘s Mikey Madison is seen as the frontrunner. Brazilian screen legend Fernanda Torres also would upset Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her work in I’M STILL HERE, denying the likes of Nicole Kidman who has been lauded for her work in BABYGIRL.

#FIRSTLOOK: “UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE” CANADA’S SELECTION FOR OSCARS INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM

Universal Language is representing Canada in the nomination process for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards®, to be held on March 2, 2025. The film is directed by Matthew Rankin, written by Matthew Rankin, Pirouz Nemati and Ila Firouzabadi and produced by Metafilms. It is being distributed in Canada by Maison 4:3. International sales are handled by Oscilloscope Laboratories.

“This year’s film submissions brilliantly showcase the exceptional talent that makes Canada shine. Universal Language by director Matthew Rankin has been selected by a jury of industry peers to represent Canada in the race for the Oscar® for Best International Feature Film,” says Julie Roy, Executive Director and CEO of Telefilm Canada. “This film is emblematic of our national cinematography: with the success it has enjoyed since its launch at Cannes, no matter what the language, it reaches audiences here and abroad. That’s the power of cinema! We wish Matthew Rankin, Sylvain Corbeil and the entire creative team the best of luck!”

Universal Language, which world premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, will have its North American premiere at TIFF on September 10, 2024. The film stars Rojina Esmaeili, Saba Vahedyousefi, Pirouz Nemati, Mani Soleymanlou and Matthew Rankin.

As the appointed non-voting chair of the committee, Telefilm Canada organizes the annual pan-Canadian Selection Committee for Canada’s submission to the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards®.

The vote was determined by a pan-Canadian committee of industry organizations and guilds, as well as filmmakers and industry professionals appointed to represent organizations. Twenty-six films were submitted for consideration as Canada’s Choice this year. The committee met the morning of August 27th to select the film.

So far, nine countries have submitted their entries for the Best International Feature Film category. Last year, 88 countries submitted a film.

Synopsis :

Winter. Somewhere between Tehran and Winnipeg. Negin and Nazgol find a large sum of money frozen deep within the sidewalk ice and try to find a way to get it out. Massoud leads a group of befuddled tourists upon an increasingly-absurd walking tour of Winnipeg monuments and historic sites. Matthew leaves his job at the Québec government and embarks upon a mysterious journey to visit his estranged mother. Time, geography and identities crossfade, interweave and collide into a surreal comedy of misdirection.

Structured like a Venn diagram – at the point of confluence between Jacques Tati and Abbas Kiarostami’s Koker Trilogy – Universal Language is at once a diary film, an absurdist city symphony and a welling-up of confinement-era emotion exploring the mysterious interzone where one person ends and the rest of the world begins. An elusive, half remembered dream of home, solitude, our responsibilities to others and the wild turkeys that haunt us.

About Canada in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars®  

In the history of the Oscars®, eight Canadian films have been official nominees in the Best International Feature Film (formerly known as the Best Foreign Language Film category): in 2013, Rebelle, by Kim Nguyen; in 2012, Monsieur Lazhar, by Philippe Falardeau and In Darkness, by Agnieszka Holland (a minority coproduction with Poland and Germany); in 2011, Incendies, by Denis Villeneuve; and, in 2007, Water, by Deepa Mehta. The list also includes three films by Denys Arcand: Le Déclin de l’empire américain, in 1987, Jésus de Montréal, in 1990 and, in 2004, Les Invasions barbares, the only Canadian film to have won the Oscar® in this category.  

About the selection process for the Best International Feature Film category 

Telefilm Canada coordinates and chairs the pan-Canadian Selection Committee, without voting right. The committee comprises some 10 members representing key government agencies and national film industry associations. Each of them may appoint a representative to the jury, in accordance with Academy rules. It is responsible for choosing the film that will represent Canada at the Oscars®, which accepts only one film per country for the Best International Feature Film category.

Academy rules were modified in 2023, specifying that juries must include a minimum of 50% craftspeople that are currently active in the film industry. Jury members must screen all submissions before participating in a virtual conference to evaluate and vote on which film will best represent Canada at the Oscars®. Jurors are encouraged to consider the quality of the films, as well as their international competitiveness.

Submitted films must have been produced outside the United States in a language of at least 51% other than English and must have been theatrically exhibited in the submitting country for at least seven consecutive days between November 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.

#OSCARS: “OPPENHEIMER” LEADS THE WAY WITH SEVEN WINS

Awards season officially has wrapped with the 96th Academy Awards having taken place at Dolby Theatre. Though OPPENHEIMER was pitted much against BARBIE this past Summer at the Box Office, alas it would be the one to dominate Awards Season, taking home seven Oscars, including the ultimate crown of Best Picture. Other wins for the Blockbuster include Directing (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson) and Best Editing (Jennifer Lame).

Yorgos Lanthimos’ POOR THINGS also would go on to glory, taking home four Oscars including Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Production Design (Production Design: James Price and Shona Heath; Set Decoration: Zsuzsa Mihalek), Best Makeup & Hairstyling (Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston) and Best Costume Design (Holly Waddington). Stone has the distinction of becoming the thirteenth Actress to win a second Oscar.

Jimmy Kimmel returned as host for the fourth time, drawing raves from the audience, capped-off by a clap back at former President Donald Trump who posted negative remarks about Kimmel online. Kimmel replied, “Thank you President Trump for watching. Isn’t it past your jail time?”, which was met with laughs and cheers.

While BARBIE was no match for OPPENHEIMER, it still took home gold for Best Original Song with Finneas & Billie Eilish‘s “What Was I Made For“, and a showstopping performance of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling was a dazzling spectable, to be talked about for many years to come.

#OSCARS: “OPPENHEIMER” LEADS WAY AMONG 96TH ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES

Nominees for the 96th Academy Awards were announced today. Leading the way is Christopher Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER with a whopping 13 nominations and Yorgos Lanthimos’ POOR THINGS, closely behind with 11 nominations.

Some surprises include exclusion of Charles Melton and Natalie Portman for MAY DECEMBER, and they’ve been in the running much of Awards Season. While nominated for Best Picture, PAST LIVES star Greta Lee wasn’t among the list of nominees as well. The same can be said about Director Greta Gerwig for Directing and Margot Robbie for Best Actress for her performance in record-smashing BARBIE.

#FIRSTLOOK: “ROJEK” TO REPRESENT CANADA FOR INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM

ROJEK is representing Canada in the nomination process for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards®, to be held on March 10, 2024. The film is directed and written by Zaynê Akyol, and produced by Audrey-Ann Dupuis-Pierre, Sylvain Corbeil, and Zaynê Akyol of Métafilms. It is being distributed in Canada by Maison 4:3 and in the United States by Icarus Films.  International sales are handled by Andana Films. 

“In what may have been Canada’s most competitive year ever, ROJEK was selected by a jury of industry peers as the film to best represent Canada in the Oscar® race,” said Julie Roy, Executive Director and CEO, of Telefilm Canada. “This announcement marks the beginning of an incredible journey and a one-of-a-kind opportunity for ROJEK to reach audiences around the world and give them just a taste of the quality of filmmaking that Canada has to offer. The documentary is told in a mix of Arabic, English, French, and Kurdish. It opened in Canadian theatres on January 20, 2023, and is available for rental on all major platforms.

ROJEK premiered at the 2022 Visions du Réel Film Festival in Nyon, Switzerland. It has screened at festivals around the world, including winning the DGC Special Jury Prize – Canadian Feature Documentary at the 2022 Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival.

As the appointed non-voting chair of the committee, Telefilm Canada organizes the annual pan-Canadian Selection Committee for Canada’s submission to the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards®.

The vote was determined by a pan-Canadian committee of industry organizations and guilds, as well as filmmakers and industry professionals appointed to represent organizations. Overall, 28 films were submitted for consideration as Canada’s Choice this year. The committee met the morning of August 24 to select the film.

So far, seven countries have submitted their entries for the Best International Feature Film category. Last year, 93 countries submitted a film.

About ROJEK

Synopsis 

ROJEK encounters incarcerated members of the Islamic State from all over the world, as well as their wives detained in prison-camps, who are sharing a common dream: establishing a caliphate. Confronted with the fundamentalist beliefs of the jihadists, the film attempts to trace the beginning, the rise and fall of the Islamic State (ISIS) through their personal stories. These conversations are the thread along which the documentary evolves, as it is intertwined with various sequences depicting current, post-war Syrian Kurdistan.

ROJEK offers an intimate gaze at an unknown reality, testifying of pivotal moments experienced by the actors of this conflict. The film tackles how this ideological war is only the beginning of a new kind of threat.

#OSCARS: “EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE” LEADS WAY WITH 11 NOMINATIONS

Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed unveiled nominees at the upcoming 95th Academy Awards. Leading the way this year is The Daniels’ EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Directing, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor and Actress. Canada’s Elevation Pictures gets a whopping twenty nominations this year with other films on their roster including THE WHALE and TRIANGLE OF SADNESS, also up for Best Picture. TIFF ’22 selection ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is a surprise late entrant in the race with an impressive nine nominations for Netfflix.

The Academy Awards take place March 12, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. EDT and air on ABC.
