Today, Nikon Canada Inc. announced their first cinema camera made for filmmakers, the ZR. The ZR is an ultra-lightweight, full-frame camera that marks an audacious introduction to the Z Cinema series, a collection that invokes the best technologies and philosophies of both companies. Designed for emerging cinematographers and high-end content producers, the supremely capable Nikon ZR packs an unparalleled amount of professional video production features at a price that puts cinematic quality within reach for all types of filmmakers.
The Nikon ZR is as versatile as it is powerful, with a multitude of original and class-leading capture and workflow features never seen before in this level of camera. The new Nikon ZR can record up to 6K/60p (59.94p) and incorporates the new R3D NE1 RAW video file format with RED colour science based on RED’s popular R3D RAW codec, with 15+ stops2 of dynamic range. This new codec uses colour science and exposure standards of RED cameras to ensure accurate colour matching, even for multi-cam shoots. The impressively huge 4 inch DCI-P3 LCD is nothing short of stunning, and bright enough to be used even in direct sunlight, while often eliminating the need for an external monitor. It also has class-leading audio capabilities such as 32-bit float audio from built-in and external microphones, plus OZO3 directional audio. The ZR also has 7.5 stops of built-in image stabilization (IBIS) and unlocks a whole new world of optical versatility, since the wide Nikon Z mount enables a large variety of lenses to be adapted using third-party lens adaptors4.
“With an incredible amount of features that have never been seen in this level of a handheld camera, the Nikon ZR offers all the creative controls that filmmakers need,” said Amanda Mohammed, Senior Director, Sales and Marketing at Nikon Canada. “The first Nikon camera developed with RED is a gamechanger for the video market — and is a testament to our commitment to video production professionals, and to the development of the advanced tools they need.”
Legendary RED Colour Science, Built-In
The new ZR features a full-frame sensor for excellent depth of field and video quality and supports internal recording up to 12-bit RAW 6K/60p. This is the first camera to use the new 12-bit R3D NE RAW codec, a new RAW format which REDCODE RAW users will find familiar. By leveraging its broad 15+ stop dynamic range, it achieves well-balanced image quality from highlights to shadows. Support for Log3G10 and the REDWideGamutRGB gamut reproduces exposure standards and colours consistent with RED colour science, with true RED colour tonality, skin tone integrity and tonal roll-off—similar to the output of RED’s cinema cameras such as the V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X. Two base ISO sensitivities are available, ISO 800 and ISO 64005, allowing users to choose the best option for a particular scene or situation such as bright daylight or lowlight interior scenes. However, just like REDCODE RAW, ISO in R3D NE files is fully adjustable in post for maximum flexibility.
Furthermore, users also have the option to shoot in N-RAW, ProRes RAW, and other formats to best suit their production and workflow. The camera also features a new view assist function which allows the user to store and select from up to ten LUTs in the camera. This will let the filmmaker preview the effect of the colour grade in real time using the monitor. Three types of LUT data (17-point, 33-point, 65-point6) can be loaded into the camera. RED’s Creative LUT Kit is available for free via the RED website here.
The ZR features a new Cinematic video mode, a user preset for those who want to easily enjoy the RED cinematic look with a faster workflow in less data-intensive non-RAW formats. Cinematic mode automatically adjusts the shutter angle to 180 degrees, changes the frame rate to 24 fps, and applies the RED Cine Bias Picture Control for gorgeous yet simple cinematic colour. What’s more, nine RED-curated cinematic Picture Controls based on RED creative LUTs will be available for free download via Nikon Imaging Cloud, expanding possibilities for more diverse imaging expression.
Incredible Audio: 32-Bit Float Audio Recording + OZO Audio Support for Built-In Mic
With uncompromising attention to audio capabilities, the ZR is the world’s first7 cinema camera to support 32-bit float audio recording with both built-in and external microphones, as well as through the 3.5 mm microphone jack. This unique ability enables the recording of clear, distortion-free sound from quiet to loud, without requiring on-location gain adjustment. It supports recording a wide range of sound sources, from interviews to live concerts, with maximum audio flexibility in post. The three high-performance mics built into the camera use Nokia’s OZO Audio technology to realize cutting-edge audio recording. Filmmakers can choose from one of the five polar pickup patterns8 — [Front (Super directional)], [Front], [All directions], [Rear], and [Stereo (binaural)] — that best suits the situation, from interviews or product tutorials to immersive audio applications.
The ZR is also the first Nikon camera to feature a digital accessory shoe, which enables two-way digital communication between the camera and compatible accessories, allowing for advanced functionality such as tally lamp and microphone LED control. Additionally, the camera can supply power directly to supported accessories, eliminating the need for separate batteries or cables. The newly designed rubber shoe cover provides excellent dust and drip resistance, ensuring reliable performance in a variety of shooting environments. Going forward, Nikon will collaborate with third-party accessory manufacturers to offer a wide range of solutions that meet the diverse needs of filmmakers.
High-Performance Autofocus with Nikon’s Deep Learning-Based AI Technology
The impressive processing power of the EXPEED 7 image-processing engine installed in Nikon’s flagship camera Z9 and AI technology that utilizes deep learning enables more accurate subject detection and tracking for optimal image processing in accordance with the subject, scene and situation. This makes capturing the intended subject with greater accuracy much easier, significantly expanding possibilities for film production. The camera also detects nine types of subjects automatically, including people, animals and vehicles. It even detects small faces occupying as little as 3 per cent of the long side of the frame for precise focusing on distant human subjects. Users can also adjust AF speed and sensitivity to suit their creative style, enabling a slow rack for cinematic effect or fast-paced focus for action.
Designed to Thrive in any Production Environment
The ZR uses an innovative fanless design, with the entire camera body contributing to efficient heat dissipation and thermal management. This design decreases audible noise, enhances battery life and increases durability. The ZR can shoot uninterrupted recording for up to approximately 125 minutes9. Additionally, USB power delivery capability allows for long takes and worry-free shooting at events that require extended recording, such as weddings, concerts and interviews.
With its magnesium alloy chassis, the ZR inherits the same rugged durability standards of Nikon’s Z6III. This means it’s designed to handle the pressures of professional production environments—indoors or out. The body is resistant to dust, sand and moisture, thanks to careful sealing at critical points like buttons, seams and ports. It’s a tool designed for real-world filmmaking—resilient under pressure and ready to shoot on location. The controls on the ZR also reflect a new filmmaker-oriented UI, with familiar menus, a new quick menu for filmmakers, as well as customizable button placement made for a cinematographer’s most used features.
Additional Features of the Nikon ZR

Nikon Canada Inc. is pleased to announce the release of firmware version 2.00 for its full-frame/FX-format mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z6III. This marks the first major update since the launch of the Z6III and introduces several features equivalent to those found in the flagship Nikon Z9 and Nikon Z8.
With its already incredible high-speed performance, this firmware update adds the long-awaited [Birds] mode to subject detection, offering an enhanced shooting experience for both still and videos. Plus, the Auto Capture function now enables automatic shooting under pre-configured conditions, supporting flexible shooting styles tailored to various situations.
Additionally, for the first time for a Nikon product, the Z6III supports the Nikon Authenticity Service*1 – a solution primarily aimed at media organizations and creators who require a high level of trustworthiness in their work. The service is compatible with the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) standard, clearly recording provenance information from shooting through to editing to ensure greater transparency and reliability of content.
Nikon will continue to enhance its products through firmware updates that address user needs, while also fostering an environment in which all photographers and creators can engage in creative and professional activities with confidence and peace of mind.
Improved Subject Detection with Dedicated [Birds] Mode
A dedicated [Birds] mode has been added to the Z6III’s subject-detection options. When [Birds] mode is selected, the camera automatically tracks birds in flight with great precision, keeping them in focus even against complex, high-contrast backgrounds such as forests and rocky mountains. This allows photographers to concentrate on framing images, helping to meet their expectations. There is also a [Focus limiter setting] that can be assigned to a custom control to limit the shooting distance range, for more accurate focusing on the desired subject. In addition, the [JPEG fine] image quality setting can now be selected when Pre-Release Capture, which records images for up to one second before the shutter-release button is fully pressed, is used during full-frame shooting at 60 fps. This makes it possible to capture the moment a bird takes flight with superior image quality.
C2PA Compliance With Image Provenance Function
Nikon is committed to developing an image provenance function that supports confirmation of image authenticity, aiming to protect individuals and enterprises in the imaging industry from any unfavourable results caused by falsification and/or image manipulation, and to realize a society in which creative and business activities can be conducted with greater peace of mind. Z6III firmware version 2.00 includes an image provenance function that complies with the C2PA standard and is part of the Nikon Authenticity Service. By making a prior request through Nikon Imaging Cloud, users can load the digital certificate necessary for recording provenance data onto the Z6III.
The image provenance function adds metadata – such as information about the equipment used and data that makes it easy to verify whether the image has been tampered with, including a digital signature – to captured image files. This enables users to prove that a photo was taken with a Nikon camera.
*2 If the image is then edited repeatedly using C2PA-compliant editing software, additional provenance information can be embedded in the image alongside the original shooting data, making it possible to prove that no misleading edits have been made.
*3 In addition, image provenance data can be viewed in Nikon Imaging Cloud.
*1 There are some restrictions on shooting when the image provenance function is enabled.
*2 Provenance information is not embedded in images that are edited in-camera.
Auto Capture Function Expands Shooting Possibilities in Any A Variety Of Situations
Firmware version 2.00 adds the Auto Capture function, which enables automatic shooting with pre-configured conditions. This allows users to specify the subject type, direction of movement, and shooting distance range*4 to capture previously difficult scenes, such as those that require shooting in places or positions where photographers would disturb their subject. The function is also equipped with a scheduling feature that allows the user to specify the day and time to initiate Auto Capture in advance, reducing battery consumption between camera setup and the start of shooting. In combination with a USB-to-Ethernet adapter*5, it enables high-speed data transfer even to remote destinations, meeting the high demands of professional environments.
Expanded Functions and Improvements to Operability
– An [Automatic monitor display switch] function for disabling the eye sensor when the vari-angle monitor is deployed has been added, a first for the Nikon Z series.
– A function that allows users to exit the zoom view with a half-press of the shutter-release button when the focus mode is set to manual has been added.
– Pixel shift shooting can now be used in combination with focus shift shooting or AE bracketing settings for more precise photographic expression than ever before.
– A [Recall shooting functions] option that allows users to recall previously stored settings – including shooting mode, shutter speed, aperture value, and ISO sensitivity – with the press of a button has been added to the roles that can be assigned to a custom control.
– Adds support for USB streaming (UVC/UAC), which allows the camera to be used as a webcam by simply connecting it to a computer or smartphone.
– By default, firmware updates are now installed automatically after the camera connects to Nikon Imaging Cloud (a note about setting the camera’s date and time has been added to the instructions for connecting to the cloud to prevent connection errors between Nikon Imaging Cloud and the camera).
– Operation has been simplified by automatically displaying an update confirmation dialog on the camera monitor after registering an imaging recipe in Nikon Imaging Cloud.
Nikon Z6III owners can visit the website here to learn more about the new firmware. Nikon will continue to enhance its products through firmware updates that address user needs, while also fostering an environment in which all photographers and creators can engage in creative and professional activities with confidence and peace of mind.

Today Nikon Canada Inc. announced the release of the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ, a full-frame power zoom lens for the Nikon Z mount made especially for video professionals. Featuring a truly versatile focal range, a customizable power zoom function1, precise manual controls and agile handling, this is the first dedicated NIKKOR Z lens that is designed to empower small-footprint productions and solo videographers with a lightweight cinematic tool that fulfills numerous roles.
The first thing that grabs your attention is the appearance of this lens — the pronounced yellow ring around the bayonet and the bold typography on the barrel stand out, indicating its rightful place in a production environment. The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ looks different than other NIKKOR Z lenses, incorporating an updated design and precise controls made to augment the workflow of cinematographers and videographers, with maximum flexibility.
The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ is a power zoom lens that spans many of the most commonly used focal lengths, from a wide 28mm for establishing shots, to 135mm for close-up/telephoto coverage. It also covers everything in between, from interviews to events, live or spot news, sports and more. The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ gives videographers superior operability and functionality in situations that require agility, such as when shooting corporate content, documentaries, or on-location coverage, when reshoots just aren’t an option.
The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ offers precise control, letting the user smoothly zoom throughout the focal range, but also offers a choice of 11 different zoom speeds2 to match a specific creative style and vision. The lens is superbly balanced, minimizing shifts in the centre of gravity that occur with zooming. This lets the user shoot with confidence, even when constantly using the power zoom feature on a gimbal. The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ also supports a variety of video accessories such as follow-focus controllers, matte boxes and more to help videographers capture the footage they want on location, as well as offering remote control capabilities using a computer or smartphone.
Thanks to the superior NIKKOR Z optical performance, this lens enables users to capture beautiful full-frame, high-resolution 8K video. The lens uses Nikon’s best anti-reflection coating, a Meso Amorphous Coat, to significantly reduce ghosting and flares, while the optical formula is optimized for video with a design that minimizes focus breathing. Additionally, the inclusion of a stepping motor (STM) ensures fast and accurate autofocusing.

Two big announcements coming from Nikon Canada today with new releases, COOLPIX P1100 (right, above) with its Tele-photo capability and the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S (left, above) which is perfect for Digital Storytellers. We have some details what to expect.
Today Nikon Canada Inc. has announced the COOLPIX P1100, a compact digital camera that features an incredible 125x optical super-telephoto zoom, with creative features that help users to create amazing photos and videos from the most extreme distances.
The COOLPIX P1100 is a compact digital camera that offers further improvements in usability and connectivity. It covers a vast range of focal lengths beginning at the wide-angle 24mm equivalent, extending to the super-telephoto 3000mm1 equivalent. The P1100 is capable of going even farther, with up to a 250×2 zoom when Dynamic Fine Zoom is enabled.
The COOLPIX P1100 makes it easy to enjoy the world of super-telephoto shooting with the ability to capture dynamic images of subjects that are difficult to approach, including birds and celestial bodies. The camera features Dual Detect Optical VR, which achieves a level of vibration reduction equivalent to 4.0 stops3 at the centre of the frame, effectively suppressing camera shake when handheld shooting. The P1100 is also able to capture 4K UHD/30p and superlapse movie recordings, helping the user make creative videos of nature and the night sky.
Further enhancements include a selectable AF-area mode in Bird-Watching Mode, and the same functions that can be assigned to the camera’s Fn button can now be assigned to the Fn1/Fn2 buttons on the optional ML-L7 Remote Control4. What’s more, a Fireworks option has been added to [Multiple exp. Lighten] scene mode. This function reduces instances of blown-out highlights that often occur when shooting long exposures, making it easier to capture impressively clear scenes of fireworks displays in which the brightness of the foreground or the background differs.
Primary Features of the Nikon COOLPIX P1100
-Incredible 125x optical zoom for super-telephoto performance up to a 24-3000mm equivalent.
-Super ED and ED lens elements provide superior chromatic aberration compensation and deliver outstanding rendering capabilities across the entire zoom range, even with super-telephoto shooting.
-Dual Detect Optical VR accurately suppresses the effects of camera shake with super-telephoto handheld shooting. This enables the capture of sharp and clear images of birds, celestial bodies, and other distant subjects at dynamic angles of view.
-Bird-Watching and Moon modes can be accessed directly using the mode dial.
-Support for 4K UHD/30p movie recording lets users beautifully record subjects with the power of super-telephoto 3000mm equivalent. Frames from movies recorded in 4K UHD format can also be saved as still images.
-Massive zoom, small size: Despite coverage of focal lengths up to 3000mm equivalent, the camera weighs only approximately 3.1 lbs (1,410g), allowing users to enjoy super-telephoto shooting more comfortably than with DSLR and mirrorless camera systems.
Additional Features of the COOLPIX P1100:
-The camera is equipped with a focus mode selector that can be used to change the focus mode even after it has been acquired, along with a control ring that enables the adjustment of settings such as white balance and manual focus.
-Optional accessory ML-L7 Remote Control connects to the COOLPIX P1100 via Bluetooth®︎, and the same functions that can be assigned to the camera’s Fn button can be assigned to the remote.
-A 3.2in. TFT LCD Vari-angle monitor with a wide viewing angle makes it easy to compose handheld or on a tripod.
-Compatible with Nikon’s exclusive RAW (.NRW) format.
-COOLPIX Picture Control5, which can be used to make adjustments in accordance with the subject, shooting situations and intentions.
-Capability to record superlapse and time-lapse movies.
-Support for Clean HDMI output6, which cleans the information display from the image output to an external monitor during recording.
-The ability to set long-exposure noise reduction to [Auto] or [Off].
-Adoption of a USB Type-C input/output connector.
-Compatible with the optional DF-M1 Dot Sight that facilitates image composition during telephoto shooting.

The optical design includes three ED glass elements and one aspherical ED element, enabling effective reduction of false colour aberrations. -Features a design optimized for video, including a clickless control ring, silent focusing and stable exposure, and suppressed focus breathing to effectively reduce shifts to the angle of view when focusing.
-Two convenient L-Fn buttons, to which a wide variety of functions can be assigned, enable smooth adjustment of settings, even during vertical shooting.
