Internationally renowned and leading Canadian production company Trio Orange in collaboration with Quebecor Content today announced Academy Award-nominated director Philippe Falardeau (Monsieur Lazhar, My Salinger Year, The Summers of the Raspberries) will present his new 4-part documentary series Lac-Mégantic: This is not an Accident at CANNESERIES 2023 as its world premiere, followed by its North American premiere at Hot Docs 2023 as part of the Deep Dive category. Directed and co-written by Falardeau with co-writer Nancy Guerin (Left Behind America, A Sister’s Song, Pink Ribbons Inc. ) and produced by Annie Sirois (Can you Hear Me?, Last Summer of the Raspberries, David Saint-Jacques Space Mission, Escobar Told By His Sons), Falardeau investigates one of the worst oil train tragedies in history; a foreseeable catastrophe ignited by corporate and political negligence. For more information on festival screenings please visit CANNESERIES and Hot Docs websites.
Almost ten years ago, on July 6, 2013, a devastating tragedy occurred in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, when a runaway train derailed in the heart of this idyllic town. Within seconds, six million liters of Bakken oil explode, killing everyone in its path, incinerating downtown.
At the heart of this series are the survivors who share their most intimate stories of lost loved ones and the string of injustices they’ve faced since that summer night. Yet, the steps needed to prevent another Lac-Mégantic tragedy are still not in place.
“It was extremely important to me to give a voice and a face to the people of Lac-Mégantic who not only suffered a massive tragedy but have been reliving the trauma over the past ten years as the powers-that-be continue to make negligent decisions that affect their everyday lives,” said Philippe Falardeau, director and writer. “Unfortunately Lac-Mégantic is not an isolated event. Even though this tragedy shocked the world and prompted widespread calls for greater safety measures, current events show that little has been done to avoid these types of transportation disasters. Our series is a call to action to bring much needed attention and change in honour of all of those who lost their lives.”
Following its festival premieres, the French language version of Lac-Mégantic: This is not an Accident begins streaming May 2 on VRAI, with other broadcast announcements to follow. The series is Executive Produced by Carlos Soldevila and created with the support of SODEC Quebec, Quebecor Fund, Rogers Documentary Fund, Canada Media Fund.
Episode 1: Itinerary of a Moving Bomb
The citizens of Lac-Megantic share their harrowing accounts from that fateful night. The episode then flashes back to June 30, 2013, where a perfect storm brews as the ill-fated train leaves the Bakken oil fields of North Dakota. Six days later it is perched on a hill that overlooks the small lakeside town. Down on Main Street, the drinks flow as the crowd dances the night away, blissfully unaware that a runaway train just cleared four rail crossings and is closing in on Lac-Mégantic.
Episode 2: Pure Souls
As downtown burns, citizens search for the missing. The scope of the destruction is evident, but the cause will take time to figure out. Officials from all over descend on Mégantic but no one takes responsibility for what’s happened. Grieving families wait days, even weeks, to learn the fate of their loved ones. We meet the people who were close to the explosions. This proximity has a durable impact. For some, their lives have been turned upside down. But for others, it becomes a defining moment.
Episode 3: The Worst Is Yet To Come
Out on the tracks, locals take safety into their own hands as they patrol the rail lines that circle Mégantic. The rebuilding process rips the town apart as citizens are left to clean up the mess that they did not create. A criminal trial gets underway where three low-level train employees face life in prison. The larger picture begins to emerge. It points to a negligent corporate culture and a system that fails to go after the higher echelons even as their decisions cause great irreversible harm.
Episode 4: This Was No Accident
High up in the Canadian Rockies, tragedy strikes again, killing three railmen. Surging from this disaster lies another grieving community searching for answers. In Lac-Mégantic, plans for a bypass divide the town even further. The new route will split the family farm of Conrad and Yolande Boulanger whose grandson died in the Mégantic tragedy. Adding insult to injury, the new rails will accommodate longer and heavier trains arriving in record numbers, with cargo far more dangerous than crude oil.
Upcoming Julian Assange Documentary ITHAKA is coming soon to Ted Rogers Hot Docs Cinema. Those attending the upcoming March 24, 2023 screening will get to see Gabriel and John Shipton (Julian Assange’s brother and father) in-person at a special Q&A.
Synopsis:
A moving and intimate portrayal of one father’s fight to save his son, Ithaka exposes the brutal realities of the campaign to free Julian Assange
Filmed over two years across the UK, Europe and the US, this documentary follows 76 year-old retired builder, John Shipton’s tireless campaign to save his son, Julian Assange.
The world’s most famous political prisoner, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, has become an emblem of an international arm wrestle over freedom of journalism, government corruption and unpunished war crimes.
Now with Julian facing a 175 year sentence if extradited to the US, his family members are confronting the prospect of losing Julian forever to the abyss of the US justice system.
This David-and-Goliath struggle is personal – and, with Julian’s health declining in a British maximum-security prison and American government prosecutors attempting to extradite him to face trial in the US, the clock is ticking.
Weaving historic archive and intimate behind-the-scenes footage, this story tracks John’s journey alongside Julian’s fiancée, Stella Moris, as they join forces to advocate for Julian. We witness John embark on a European odyssey to rally a global network of supporters, advocate to politicians and cautiously step into the media’s glare – where he is forced to confront events that made Julian a global flashpoint.
Ithaka provides a timely reminder of the global issues at stake in this case, as well as an insight into the personal toll inflicted by the arduous, often lonely task of fighting for a cause bigger than oneself.
ITHAKA screens at Hot Docs Cinema on March 19th, 20th, 24th, 25th and 26th, 2023.

Midwives documents a small birthing clinic in the highly politicized region of western Myanmar, where Rohingya Muslims are persecuted. The owner of the Centre, a Buddhist named Hla, helps all women who enter the facility. She works along with the assistance of Nyo Nyo, a member of the Rohingya Muslim community and Hla’s apprentice.
This is one of the best Documentaries of the year. Hlaing brings us to an area of the world where a civil war has been waging for years and the minority group, the Rohingya people, have been made to live in fear under the military regime. But amongst this war, Director Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing shows us a story of empathy and hope through the beautiful act of caring for the ill and bringing new life into the world.
She followed Hla and Nyo Nyo for over five years, and what she captured is a story of resilience.
Even though Hla faces huge risks and possibly getting her clinic shut down for treating Rohingya Muslims, she continues to do it. Hla is doing all she can to help, however, she still uses a name for the Rohingya people that they find insulting, even when speaking to or about Nyo Nyo. Including these moments shows how ingrained prejudices can still have an effect on even those who are actively fighting to help.
Over the five years, Nyo Nyo learns how to become a medical practitioner from Hla. After desiring to flee western Myanmar for a different city where her sister lives, life gets in the way and she is forced to stay. However, her determination and resilience to make something of her life leads her to raise money and build her own clinic. Through the interviews with Nyo Nyo, we get a wider view of not only the conflict happening but the positions women are placed. Her inspiring story shatters the boxes that society had packed her into.
Overall, see Midwives whenever and wherever you can. You won’t regret it.
Midwives screens at Hot Docs ’22:
Sun, May 1 at 8:15 PM at Isabel Bader Theatre
Thu, May 5 at 11:45 AM at Varsity
Online streaming is available for five days starting on MAY 2 at 9:00 AM

As a child of a parent who was as an Auschwitz survivor, I am constantly drawn to Documentaries about said subject matter as watching narrative features on the topic (Schindler’s List, Son of Saul, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) devastate me emotionally and I can only watch those when the sun shines as that brightness signifies life and hope. Being Catholic and consigned to work in the kitchens, my mother’s experience there may not have been as laborious and dangerous as other survivors, but her daily horrors were parallel to those with numbers tattooed on their arm. Executive produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, Writer/Producer/Director Sara Takster’s HOW SABA KEPT SINGING is one of the best Documentaries about the Holocaust that I have seen.
94-year-old David “Saba” Wisnia always believed he survived the camp because he would entertain the Nazi SS officers with his exceptional singing voice. His musically-inclined grandson, Avi, had heard many stories from his grandfather when growing up but felt there were still many things unspoken. As we watch these two men throughout many years, which include two visits to Auschwitz, we are also introduced to Helen “Zippi” Spitzer from audio tapes she made when being interviewed and are housed in the United States Memorial Museum in Washington DC. Also musically inclined (she played the mandolin in the orchestra that would “greet” the new prisoners entering the camp), Zippi survived due to the Nazi capitalizing on her strengths as a graphic artist and designer. Midway through the movie, Saba and Zippi’s lives and stories intersect.
HOW SABA KEPT SINGING exceeds levels of expectations, both historical and emotional. It helps tremendously that Saba and Avi have an enviable and loving bond and that Saba is wildly-fascinating and erudite with an impish sense of humour. With insights from Zippi, the story is equally heartwarming and heartbreaking. Secrets unfold that illuminate and astonish.
HOW SABA KEPT SINGING is a towering achievement that moved me both to tears and laughter and, in a perfect world, Avi Wisnia deserves an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Montreal-born Writer/Producer/Director Barry Avrich may be one of Canada’s most prolific Filmmakers. His critically-acclaimed Documentaries often showcase the notorious (Harvey Weinstein, Garth Drabinsky) or well-established, show business personalities (David Foster, Oscar Peterson, Howie Mandel). His latest, THE TALENTED MR. ROSENBERG, will have its World Premiere at Hot Docs and with a sly wink and tweaking of the title of a renowned novel by Patricia Highsmith (Ripley anyone?) tells the addictive tale of con-artist extraordinaire Allen Albert Rosenberg, best known as the Yorkville Swindler.
With input from two of his ex-wives and one of his daughters, alongside interviews with the police, various lawyers and journalists, Avrich paints a shocking portrait of a man with no remorse after fraudulently absconding with millions of dollars to upkeep a lavish lifestyle in one of Toronto’s most toniest districts. Described by the courts as someone with “Machiavellian Chutzpah” (a term I will use endlessly from this day forward!), THE TALENTED MR. ROSENBERG is Barry Avrich’s most compelling Documentary to date.

Michael Lewis in conversation with Ira Glass
Michael Lewis’ first book, Liar’s Poker, about working on Wall Street in the ‘80s, turned him into a literary icon. When he went into the studio to record a new audiobook version of Liar’s Poker, he thought a lot about how much Wall Street has (or hasn’t) changed. He also thought about his own
evolution as a writer. Those musings became a new podcast series called Other People’s Money, which is being released as a companion to Liar’s Poker. In this celebration of two of the greatest non-fiction storytellers of our time, Lewis, whose other books include Moneyball and The Big Short, is joined by Ira Glass, creator and host of public radio’s This American Life, to discuss their award-winning bodies of work and how they learned to stop imitating others and write like themselves.

Masterclass in Audience Engagement
“If you have a big social following, your podcast audience numbers are guaranteed. If you’re a celebrity, no doubt people will tune into your show. Having a show that’s outside the mainstream means only only a few listeners will tune in (likely your friends and family).” All of these are misconceptions in how to establish, engage with, and grow your audience in podcasting. As the classic saying in podcast audience engagement goes, “It’s an art, not a science.” At this masterclass, leading insiders from Acast dig into the most interesting audience engagement trends and strategies they’ve seen and executed with creators of all backgrounds.

The 2021 HOT DOCS FESTIVAL runs April 29 to May 9, 2021. Taking-on a virtual format this year, bringing the Festival home to Festival Goers. Make no mistake though, just because the Festival can be enjoyed at home doesn’t meant the quality of this year’s events and Films are compromised. If anything, this perhaps is one of the strongest years in recent memory with several high-profile Documentaries set to premiere including STREET GANG: HOW TO GET TO SESAME STREET, Edgar Wright‘s THE SPARKS BROTHERS and Sundance Award-winning SUMMER OF SOUL and several more. All Films go live starting at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2021 on the online platform.
Our Justin Waldman and George Kozera share their most-anticipated Films of the Festival with us.
There is a wealth of great Documentaries available for screening this year at HOT DOCS. When asked what were my Top Five movies I was most excited to see, I was in a conundrum. There are just too many to choose from. So, to make it easier on myself and, let’s face it, these times are stressful enough without more added pressure, I am submitting my list of Documentaries that are solely focused on the arts and the entertainment community.
1. SUMMER OF SOUL (…OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) – Questlove’s directorial debut about the six-week- long Harlem Cultural Festival held in 1969, a stone’s throw away from Woodstock, has every fiber in my being, every cell in my body twitching with excitement. Part-music concert, part-historical record on Black History, this winner of two awards at Sundance is so up my alley. Musical performances from Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Gladys Knight and the Pips are but a few of the names who sang on stage. All I can say is that I am thrilled to watch this at home as I’m sure my standing up to dance to the music and sing along would scare those seated around me. This Special Presentation will be streamed May 5th.
2. FANNY: THE RIGHT TO ROCK – This all-girl Rock Band was definitely ahead of its time and inspired many female musicians to pick up guitars and drums and play like and with the big boys. I was a fan obsessed with their music and talent and relished the thought of knowing more about their music, struggles and what they are currently doing.
3. THE ROSSELLINIS – Cinema has many family dynasties: The Hustons, the Barrymores, the Fondas, and the Coppolas to name but a few. But my knowledge about the Rossellinis is sketchy at best. I have seen some of acclaimed Director Robert Rossellini’s work, know of his marriage to Ingrid Bergman and, of course, there’s the hauntingly beautiful Isabella. But this Documentary, from Roberto’s grandson Alessandro, sounds to fascinating to pass-up.
4. THE SPARKS BROTHERS – Truthfully, I don’t think I’ve ever consciously heard any music from these two brothers or seen them ever perform on TV. But I follow Director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Baby Driver) on Instagram and his enthusiasm for his directorial Documentary debut is downright infectious. And isn’t that why we watch documentaries…to learn new things?
5. 7 YEARS OF LUKAS GRAHAM – I’m not sure where or how I first heard the song “7 Years”, but I was impressed enough to check it out on YouTube and became a fan of Lukas Graham. This is an admirable, no holds barred, warts and all Documentary on the rise of this talented group from Denmark. Its honesty must be applauded.
1. STREET GANG: HOW WE GOT TO SESAME STREET – Let’s be real, who doesn’t love Sesame Street? The Carol Spinney Documentary from a few years ago brought me to tears, and being able to have a further in-depth look into Sesame Street is a definite must see!
2. THE SPARKS BROTHERS – Edgar Wright, yes that him (!) directed a Music Documentary. If you’ve ever seen an Edgar Wright movie, lets be real who hasn’t, then you know how much care and effort he puts into his soundtracks. If you love good music, great storytelling, and a pair of wacky brothers, then The Sparks Brothers is for you.
3. SUMMER OF SOUL (…OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) – If you’re not excited for this incredible-looking Documentary directed by Questlove that won the hearts of everyone at Sundance, then I don’t know what to tell you. This is one of my most anticipated Documentaries of the entire Festival, and I CANNOT wait to get to see this beautiful work of art.
4. HYSTERICAL – Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster, Nikki Glaser, Iliza Shelsinger – is there anything else that needs to be said to get you hyped to watch a Documentary on some of the FUNNIEST women on the planet? Sit back, laugh whole-heartedly, and learn the inside of the business with this wonderful Documentary.
5. WEWORK: OR MAKING AND BREAKING OF A $47 BILLION UNICORN -People were buzzing about this one in particular coming out of SXSW and since then it has skyrocketed to the top of my list. One of the more interesting looks into the capitalism bubbles we have seen lately, and Adam Neumann, specifically.
